White kitchens with dark floors- I don't get it
Comments (53)Wood floors are like jeans. Some prefer a dark rinse, some prefer faded, and some like the regular medium blue denim. I love gray jeans, but they are harder to find. They all work and you don't have to match the color to anything. The very dark wood floors have been more popular the last five years or so. They aren't as warm as lighter floors, but they still look great. They aren't necessary for contrast if you already have white cabinets/black counters, but they are part of a look that many prefer. I chose a medium stain for the floors in my white kitchen with dark counters because they show less dust and look great with the area rug in my great room. The shade is similar to the floors I once had in a Victorian house built in 1895, and it is similar to the floors my friend has in her house built in the 50s. I consider it to be warm and neutral and I can't imagine ever tiring of it....See MoreWhite kitchen- Blk Hardware w/ Dark Grey Quartz Counter tops?

With red oak what you will have to do is sand it, put a clear coat sealer on it so the red tanins won't bleed out into the stain, and then they can top coat it with a spray on semi-opaque gel stain, and then finish with another coat of pre-cat clearcoat. Manufacturers and good refinishers have their mix that will not look pink over red oak. However, this is not a cheap process. 6000 sq/ft of sanding, clear coating, and top spraying gel stain + the top coat? The price will make your jaw hit the floor so hard it will go through it. It would probably be cheaper to just take the floor out and buy pre-finished hardwood in grey and have someone install it. This way you don't have to move out of the house either....See MoreWhite floors w/gray walls, or gray floors w/white walls?
Comments (12)Maybe just consider doing a refresh. For a relatively cost effective, plus easy approach - I would suggest just putting down a piece of sheet linoleum or vinyl, over the existing tile. You won’t have to rip out the tile, and you can bring in any color/pattern you want. And btw, this type of sheet flooring has come a long way; many attractive options. You could do one that simulates a white tile floor. I also like some of the wood looks and terrazzo looks. Your bathroom floor area is relatively small, so this should be a fairly easy and inexpensive option. Change out the vanity lights. Lots of ways you can go with that, finish and style-wise; and I think that single change could really make a significant difference in the space. You can go ahead and paint the walls, and maybe also change the faucets.. These small changes will fairly easily create a new room; and this could hold you over temporarily - or permanently....See Moreherbflavor
