Repotting budding Thanksgiving Cactus a no-no?

I got a little Thanksgiving Cactus from ShopRite for two bucks and it does look quite healthy despite the soil it's in feeling hard and yet moist the entire week that I've had it. It's not fully blooming yet but has buds; would it be bad for me to repot it now? Or should I just be patient and wait until it finishes blooming?

Do you want it to just dry a bit? I've bought them from BBS and they're always soaking wet with extra water that doesn't drain out, I take them out of the pot and let sit on newspaper and/or paper towels to help them dry out. I wouldn't repot now unless the bottom is already rotten... is the base firm or complete mush.. a pic may help.

Another option is same exact size terracotta pot w/o messing with roots.

Chances are if you disturb it, it will abort its buds. If it doesn't seem unhappy now, wait till blooming is finished.

Grant, I would imagine you will want to remove as much of the "peaty mix" as possible as to not introduce a difference in the mixes drying time. The 511 mix will obviously dry faster than the peaty mix and while you may believe the plant is dry enough to water again, the center of the root mass may still be moist/wet. I failed to remove all the "peaty mix" from a ZZ Plant I purchased last year and planted it in fast draining cactus mix. When the cactus mix would dry, I'd water. Almost a year later, the ZZ Plant died from rot. While the outer mix was drying out fast, the dead center of the root mass was staying too moist and it literally rotted from the inside out. Planto

Mine started budding early last week. They bloom every year for me: summers outdoors on a balcony with filtered Western sun, fertilizer and leaving outside until almost first frost. Once the buds fatten up a little bit, I bring indoors. I don't wait until they are fully formed b/c I don't want to risk them blasting from the temp. change. So, I try to bring them in when the temps. both outside and in are the closet(usually during the daylight hours) to reduce shock. Can't wait to post pics when they bloom! Happy Growing....

I think the reason for the buds not blooming could be that they are exposed to extremes in temperature. Excess heat or cold will kill off buds, but maybe these cacti are more sensitive to a draft or change in temperature? I'm not terribly sure about overwatering or underwatering, but for H. undatus, to help prepare for flowering, you let it go dry for a month or so, then water it gradually. So maybe letting the roots go a little dryer than usual would be beneficial to help induce formation of buds? For my Christmas Cactus, I give the plant a normal amount of water, and it perks up fine after or during flowering. Mine will wilt during flowering somewhat, perhaps because of the water and energy needed to keep up a flower, its fruit, or a bud. While it's flowering, probably keep the soil on the moist side. hi MGF, New growth is pink at this time of year. There is a colorful sport of Christmas cactus called Schlumbergera aura Cristen (see pic) that is so pretty in spring that you don't care if it blooms or not. But, alas, it matures to a lively chartreuse color and has hot pink blooms.

Thank you both.

I thought that's what the answer would be, so I am going to just leave in current mix until after blooming. It looks perfect now so I would think it can last another few weeks. Nanzjade good idea, I am going to go see if it's still super wet and if so I may try that.
