Fireplace Mantel Makeover - Do you Like it? (PICS)
Comments (16)pattycakes - Thanks, I love the idea of changing things periodically. I do have some special decorations for the Christmas season, but other than that, I'm hoping to swap out the hydrangeas for fall foliage, twigs, or whatever is in season. folkvictorian - The creamy colored items were what drew me to the inspiration picture. I probably wouldn't have thought to use such a light color, but when I saw the picture, I knew it could work. Anything dark gets lost against the brown tones of the stone. teacats - Thank you, and I am a flower garden girl who loves anything with blooms. oakleyok - I struggled with this spot for the past several years, so if I've saved you any grief with your own mantel, I'm very glad! Did you post about your mantel before? I seem to remember reading something about someone's situation, and I don't recall if it was you or not. carolefm and jeane - Thanks, and I'm glad if the hearth doesn't need anything, as I've pushed my decorating pea brain as far as it can go for awhile - LOL. kitchenkelly - Thank you! It means a lot to hear positive feedback from this group. I am such a novice that I always feel hesitant to post pictures of my humble attempts, but I'm glad I did now. natal - I purchased the tin from an antique dealer online, and it came painted this way. I do like the natural color, but again, it would get somewhat lost in the stone background if too much were exposed. Maybe I can sand some more off, but I'm a little chicken to try that....See Morewhich stone do you like better for the fireplace?
Comments (30)This post has more pics of your space which I think are helpful in deciding what will work. I *love* the stone on the right, but I wonder if it would be too much small rectangles going on with the backsplash you have (which is beautiful, BTW!) So I guess my vote is for the one on the left. I wish I could see them both photoshopped! Here is a link that might be useful: Srg's thread with pics...See MoreFireplace - simple update what would you do?
Comments (7)Some of our colleagues are still focused on telling clients to leave things alone, but we figure if they are on this forum they want change: so let's give it to them! First of all, agree with poster above re TV above fireplace, especially since you have a lot of light coming from the side windows. Install a nice big piece of art. (no large clocks!) Secondly, you would want to balance the design using the same features right to left, for example, go with the same shelves on right and add books and other decor items of . If you want to do TV on right or left, OK., but take off cabinet doors regardless. Then, let's address light fixture: go with a lower pendant to hit the wall midway, with large art behind it, plus tall vases on mantel will add layers/depth. Hope this helps. Best luck!...See MoreHow do I update “half wall” above fireplace
Comments (24)Taking Erinsean's idea about adding drywall to the front of the hearth, here are a couple more ideas. I have kept your existing wall decor, but there are certainly other options there as the wall becomes more of a normal backdrop. Here's how it might look if you drywall over the stones and the face of the hearth and then grey was the hearth and put some slate around the opening with a white mantel surround and our Carolina Window Pane Fireplace Door. To achieve this look you would need to float the fireplace opening out with bricks before installing the slate. Here's the same concept without the slate and mantel just using our Legend Fireplace Door with Custom Tuscan Leaf Surround. You cannot use drywall right up to the fireplace opening because it is combustible, so you would need to float the fireplace opening out with bricks and then plaster over the bricks to finish flush with the drywall. Bit of a challenge, but doable. Hansen Wholesale specializes in Custom Fireplace Doors....See More- 8 years ago
