Anyone have experience with Optimara's Space Violets?
Comments (22)Irina: All my AV's are grown under lights with the exception of those I display around the home. The stands I have are 72 x 48 x 18.. all chrome on caster. I like the fact they are on heavy duty casters.. I can move them around. They come with 6 shelves, but I only use 5 on some and 4 on others. Mini's, semi's and babies are on the 5 shelf and all the standards are on the 4 shelves. Shelves are adjustable to the height you need, as with all the light fixtures. The very top shelf, where there are no fixtures, I use to store all my supplies, also on the floor under the shelves I can store supples too. All my standards are wicked on deli containers that I buy by the case.. some of my show mini's and semi's are wicked on them also. All the others are in holeless trays with set-in egg crates - wicked also. Each shelf can hold 4 trays. I think I will check out the Wal-Mart pots with saucers.. I have an idea that might work.. attached the fishing line to the saucer, place an 8 ounce deli container in the saucer, then put the plant in the pot on top of the deli container. This way there is more water for the reservoir.. might try that to see if it works.. also the Dandy containers are another way that could be used for the hanging trailers. Just put a saucer under the Dandy pot to hold it with the line attached.. this might work also. And they are attractive too. Well I am always thinking of new things to do with plants. My husband says he never knows what I am up too!! Tea...See MoreAnyone Grow 'Yul's Paradise?'
Comments (8)I don't think it's a virus. It's been touching the others and none have gotten anything suspicous besides powdery mildew and that one was the only one that didn't get it! Is it possible that it's growth is slower than my Optimaras? Come to think of it, the white NOID I mentioned grows fairly slowly, too. I just didn't notice it since it is potted in a dish with the much more rigorous Optimaras. Do some cultivars simply grow slower? I've read that Optimaras are the "iron violets." Maybe they grow faster? That's interesting how it has a name that isn't registered... Man, I thought I had at least one named violet. Weird how it has a name but is not registered. As for checking with the grower, I bought it at a church sale and do not recall the nursery. I think the leaves are spotted from getting water on them. The new leaves grow in normal and have more varigation on them than the old ones. The seller didn't seem to know much about them (although neither did I at that point) and were mostly selling orchids. They almost sold me an episcia as an African Violet!...See MorePlants from Optimara ...
Comments (38)Hi Leon! Well, yeah not many people have suitable windowsills but it does still work for me, but if you don't have them, try to put up a flourescent light over a table! The pix I have posted isn't mine. I can't remember where I got it, but since I have one (or more) of these old treadles I kept the pix so I can do it! It is a great idea if you want to be decorative. Or you can put up a bakers shelf in a laundry room, or a spare bedroom etc and fit it with flourescent lights! And by the way, those lights will make your violets take off like gangbusters!!!!! Go thru some of the older posts to see how others have them displayed! Necessity is the mother of invention!!!!! Good luck!!!!! Rosiethis is my east window with a vintage metal window shelf plant holder. this is the great idea I was telling you about! I want to do this eventually!...See MoreOptimara African Violets
Comments (17)Marianne, I have never lived in Florida, but the first thing that came into my mind is this. It is really HOT in greenhouses and to get around that, they run fans (in your case run a small one) and they keep some of the violets that need it (like Modesty) under a black net to additionally cool them. Not all violets love bright light. Variagation wants coolness. Things do work different in a greenhouse, but violets will adapt. Since you grow in natural light as I do, my Modesty was very happy in my unobstructed NORTH window. The least light available. In my east window she wasn't happy. West window either. If necessary maybe try a little lamp near her if you move her back from a window. Your violets are very pretty even without Modesty's flowers! I have Millennia on one of the pages of my wish list ! And did the NOID come from Optimara also? Rosie...See MoreKim
