Optimara Violets
Comments (2)Hello Terri, Thank-you for replying to my post. I looked on FB and was able to id a lot of my avs. Thank-you. I have looked at so many pictures that I'm about cross-eyed now. I do have one that I can't seem to find or maybe I'm just looking in the wrong place. It's an optimara. Flowers are single star, flowers are so dark red they appear black, leaves are pointed, dark green with deep red-reverse. Does anyone have any ideas on this one? plmk, Debbie While I was looking on FB to id my optimara avs, I saw a picture of Mississippi. WOW it is gorgeous. Well me being from Miss. I would love to have a couple of leaves. Does anyone have some to share with me? Please send me a private email. I might have something you like. Thanks, Debbie...See MoreDoes anyone only have one African Violet?
Comments (51)When my grandmother passed away in 1999 I rescued an AV from her kitchen table. Her house had already been closed up for a few weeks when we went to clean it out, and it was mid-summer, so the poor thing had essentially been in an oven. It was all brown and dried out, and my heart went out to it. I had no idea what it was, but I took it home... and promptly killed it by over-watering it. Enter AV #2, because clearly I needed to prove to myself that I could take care of one and not kill it. So for a little while, yes, I had only one AV. However, AVs #3, 4, 5, and 6 followed closely thereafter. Then I moved from Boston to LA. My apartment I was moving into didn't get any light and I was worried the AVs would die during the road trip, so I left them all with my mother. That was years ago and she's taken wonderful care of them. She always shows them off to me when I visit them. I mean her. :0) Now for the most recent round of obsession... Three years ago I rescued an AV off of a co-workers desk after she quit unexpectedly (that's the one that's never bloomed until now). For a few weeks, yes, I owned only one. But then I happened to see one with girl foliage at the supermarket, and found it so unusual that I had to buy it. For three years I had just the two AVs, but now I'm in full-on obsession mode again. It started when I moved into my condo over the summer and had all this sunlight flooding in... and, well, you can imagine the rest!...See MoreHas anyone ordered from the Violet Barn? (have hoya's too)
Comments (4)Love their violets. Their hoyas are tiny, though. I would recommend SRQ Hoyas and Gardino's (though I haven't ordered from Gardino's yet, I've heard great things) and skip Violet Barn. For hoyas, anyway. Again, great violets and other gesneriads, but not impressed with their hoyas. I received the one I ordered from them with only 4 leaves, and one leaf promptly fell off shortly after receiving it, so I was left with 3 leaves and a plant about an inch and a half tall. That being said, it's doing pretty well, but it will be years before it is big enough to flower, I'm pretty sure. It's not the worst thing, but when they're that tiny, it just gives you no leeway. You have to be really careful with watering and care until it becomes established enough to weather occasional neglect. And there's no way to take a cutting to save the plant if it starts going downhill, because there's really nothing to it. I have received cuttings in trades that are about 5 to 10 times the size of the hoya I received from them. It was healthy when I received it, though, I will say that. And like I said, it's doing well. But I am not so patient that I want to wait years and years for it to even grow big enough to flower, let alone the wait for it to be happy enough to flower. I'm okay with this one, and I did know what I was getting into by getting it from them. If my whole collection was that small though, I think I'd freak out from impatience ; )...See MoreDoes anyone grow Optimara Scorpio?
Comments (8)It is possible to find other girl leave plants. This one is $13 plus postage on the Optimara website. It is 3" rather than 4". The girl leaves grow slower and stay small. They are pretty. They need a bit of extra care, as any variegated leaf plant does. You might find one in a grocery store that carries violets if you live in an area that offers violets. But it is unlikely. However, to find any girl leaf, you will probably have to mail order. Lyndon Lyon's has a few. The average cost is about $7 or $8 plus postage, so you are paying the same postage whether you buy one or a few. So the temptation is to buy more than you might truly want or have space for. In my experience, it is best not to fall in love with a plant based on its "class photo." It had its hair done, its freckles were photo-shopped out, its smile was artificially brightened. It might eventually look like the photo, but not for the first couple of bloom cycles. Or believe the advertising that it is in limited supply. Sure, it probably is, but if it hurts your wallet, then there might be a cheaper way to get it or one like it. Another possibility is to find a violet club if there is one near you and contact them or go to a meeting. For the cost of dues for one year, you can get many plant and leaf starts of exotic varieties. Joanne...See Morewendyz
