Young Green Ash Trouble
Comments (5)That is scale insect sucking sap out of your tree. Treat immediately. If you are lucky the tree may recover. Whether scale is the primary problem can't be determined from the pics, but the staking is all wrong and likely affecting the tree as well. Remove that stake. If the tree can't stand, then you'll need to stake properly. There are trillions of hits on The Google to show you how - pay attention to the directions. If the tree makes it, make the mulch ring larger as well. It is hard to tell if the plant is planted too deeply, but that may be an issue as well. If the tree doesn't make it, when you replace ensure you find some directions on proper planting and follow them. Good luck. Dan...See MoreMy New Rose Book is Causing Trouble.
Comments (34)(It sounds as if ordering from Hortico is a lot like playing the lottery.) I have the Quest-Ritson book. The photo section alone will blow you away. What a wonderful way to spend time -- a cup of tea and this book. The reason I went to Amazon the other day was to see if I could order Stephen Scaneillo's book. I ordered that one (which came yesterday -- another very good one.) While I was perusing the other rose books, I noticed the G. A. Stevens one (ordered that), and one by William Welch. I don't have the Thomas or Warner books. I guess it's time for me to create an Amazon wish list. I dream of creating a garden of roses over my head and lining the walls. Some of these climbers and ramblers are more than I can resist. I sat the other afternoon and went carefully through the Rogue Valley catalog. After all of the nice things said here about them, I have placed an order, I plan to order a number of roses from them later on. (One I got this time was "Connie's Favorite Gallica". I just had to do it.) I also ordered Emily Gray, and I will try Susan Louise and Erinnerung an Brod. Paul's Lemon Pillar will wait till at least a spring order, and I will also get Paul's Scarlet. (My favorite Aunt grew Paul's Scarlet, and I'll get it in tribute to her.) The photos of Mrs. Arthur Curtiss James are really pretty. I didn't used to like yellow roses much, but I seen to be drawn to them now. I guess we all go through phases. Connie...See MoreNew garden - having trouble growing onions
Comments (2)agmss, I had the same problem last year with onions from sets, and followed advice to try plants. This years crop is looking much, much better. I have three beds devoted to onions, two of which seem to be having faster, more robust growth. Those beds had beans; one Fortex, one yellow bush (forgot variety) After I had harvested LOADS of beans I cut the vines, chopped them, and dug them back into the soil with relatively fresh horse manure. On one bed I planted a crop of field peas as a cover crop. Tilled in spring, no added fertilizer. Bed with pea cover crop seems to be doing best... While I can't plant as straight a row as jamesandfely (nice crop guys!!!) I have harvested about ten pounds of reasonably sized Copra from a 20 foot row. Haven't harvested Patterson yet, but they look even better. All of the above being said I am new to onions, and was advised against some of the things I have done. However gardening as an experience is all about balance. Keep notes and keep trying!...See MoreHaving trouble making my new garden "cohesive"
Comments (1)As hard as it is, you need to let it grow for a year or so. It looks very nice right now, and will look nicer as the plants get older and start filling in. You may even find that you need to move things, as they get too big for where they are now. What are the dimensions of the bed?...See MoreFrancis Earl Atilano(Zamboanga City, Philippines)
