How much is too much of a good thing?

I'm still working on my family room - I changed paint colors again, now I think going with (a SW color match of) Farrow and Ball Ringwold Ground. I'll have a blue TV armoire, medium "french blue" curtains and a blue and gold toile pattern fabric for pillows/window seat cushions.

But in the meantime I'm on to the next project, the "piano room" which is connected to the family room by a large cased opening and the breakfast area. I have the rug shown which is navy blue, green/blue, red, olive, and gold. The open breakfast area has soft gold paint, similar to SW Believeable Buff and I'd like to leave it but paint the Piano room. I'm thinking to pick up a green/blue color in the rug. Currently have samples of F&B Pale Powder and Light Blue on order.

I was waiting for inspiration to strike for my dining room. I saw an episode of Top Chef he other night with a celebrity chef's dining room and I loved it! Only it's blue and gold/brass too. I have 1970s vintage French style cherry furniture, so obviously different than the chef's dining room. But if I painted my dining room that color of blue (it has cream waiscotting and crown already), and used brass accents, would it be too much blue?

What? No. At least I don't think so. My philosophy is that rooms, especially the public rooms, should have a unifying "something" whether it be a colour, or a scale of pattern, or a pattern of different colours (eg checks or plaid but a different colour). For my home it's blue accessories with a bit of copper thrown in.. Yours will be the blue with each room still having their own personality.

But I also like blue and love what you're doing. You could even, if you wanted to, add brass accents in a small way into your other rooms. And yes, I am also of the opinion that metals can be mixed as long as they are not competing.

Definitely not too much blue, IMO. I love what you're doing in your home, particularly since you're being very careful to make sure that you LOVE what you select. More blue, please. Yes. More blue.

Ingrid, yes, the site and the house say cottage garden all the way. I love your suggestion of perennials to go with roses. I will tuck some herbs in there where it is the sunniest. Rosefolly, it is very helpful to know about the growth habit of OTN and I will go ahead and plant it in front of GH. And, that is a good point about the leaf stripping and lack of sun. It makes sense. Why do you strip GH leaves? To make pruning easier? Jeri, I will "go for it!" As much as I hate to move plants, sometimes you just have to do it. Also, Mountain View, CA is quite warm and dry in the summer. And the bed is totally sunny after 10am when the sun rises above a big Siberian elm. Thank you all very much. I'm a real convert with the new guineas. They really are pretty but I'm curious as to where the heck to get their seed. I mean I get some wholesale catalogs and they offer plants o'plenty of all varieties of NG impatiens - doubles and funky colors that I would love to get my hands on - seed. Does anyone have a good source for NG impatien seed???? !! Thanks, I hope that the pictures help with my experience of the flowers. I DO have to say even though they're not so good this year with as much rain as I've had they still really are colorful - which is my main objective. They don't look as full, but heck, I can't complain, really. Thanks, I'm glad to hear the pictures help... :) Makes it worth it! Ok, back to business - the NGs that I started were very interesting to me. They were essentially a 'mix' even though they were supposed to be 'Java Coral Flame' (I think that's what they were supposed to be!) BUT they are a definite mix of that. Some are straight coral/salmon colored, some have a flame, some have dark foliage, some have reddish foliage, some are light green foliage... etc... but where I was going with this (you were saying they aren't blooming as much as you'd like...) is that ONE of the plants has NO blossoms on it - NONE. IT's strickly foliage... I don't know what causes that! But you reminded me of it. I'll keep posting pictures! Thanks!

well gee whiz Daisy. I didn't know you were dating my ex. just teasing. I have run through a lifetime of excellent men. I would have run a little slower if I had known the supply was limited. Off topic but I have been thinking about you Daisy. I think I have discovered why the online dating thing did not work for me and I wonder what you think. I am used to being persued, and I expect the same is true of you. This has more to do wth my generation than my powers of attraction. ~grin~ In the past, a certain number of men have shown interest in me and I have picked one that appealed to me from that group. Throwing myself into a group who have shown no previous interest is not something I know much about. Now, I am Woman, and have no trouble asking a man to dinner, making my interest known, etc. etc., but I am still making these overtures within a group that I have at least SEEN and sensed that my interest would be, if not returned, at least not scorned or spurned. Does this make sense? I was desperate to get a picture online because I wanted someone to pick me. And then I could choose from among the pickers. I don't know how to play this game unless it starts with me being courted.

Thanks so much everyone for the great responses. bobo - I wish I had pictures! The great room is chock full of items we're storing due to the remodel, so that won't help, but the existing chandy is over a very nice mahogany pool table. The layout of the front entry is loosely based on my inspiration photo below (which is more country, I know, but it's what I love). Our entry will be wider, and will have double front doors almost exactly like the pic posted below except they will also have a 10' wide custom transom above the doors and sidelights, and will be stained a deep, warm brown. These doors are very rustic, but fit the exterior of the house perfectly. I plan on using a hutch, grandfather clock, etc., in the space (and maybe even the stacked oval boxes, if I can get away with it). The floors will either be wood as in the pic or similar to the stone in our kitchen, also shown below. The arch between the entry and great room may have pillars and a beam in the same stain as the front door. Uxorial - I really like your chandelier and love your log home! Auntjen - your antler chandelier is obviously very special, since your father made it for you. I'd love to see it. kitchendetective - Arte de Mexico has a store very close by and they do have wonderful items. Their furniture is beautiful although perhaps a bit more rustic than the style I'm looking for (I'm more of a country farm table and hutch person), I did notice they had great lighting choices. It's been awhile so I'll have to visit the store again. littledog and okmoreh - you said exactly what I meant to say! I want my home to be decorated in the style my dh and I find appealing - elegant rustic meets early American country (he's the rustic and I'm the country!) but don't necessarily want to decorate in objects that labeled a definitive style. It's easy to cross the line and get "campy" with rustic decorating - which can be fun but not the look I'm aiming for :) I do find antler chandeliers done right to be beautiful pieces of sculpture, so hopefully I'm on the right track! To those of you who commented on Premier's statement - I wasn't offended in the slightest as reading his/her comments on other posts over the last few months caused me to immediately disregard his/her post on this thread! I don't think so, but I might look at the armoire when picking the paint -- not necessarily to match but to make sure they flow together.

I am going to have blue in every room on the first floor -- and I guess I did before but we reordered things so I feel like there will be more blue. My entire downstairs is blues and browns and the upstairs has been back and browns -- I'm just trading places with the colors now with the biggest change being changing out a brown leather sectional with caramel and navy walls or lighter and dark greige/bronze walls and a deep blue leather sectional (arriving next week!).

If you are a blue person, it is not to much to have it in every room. It can provide continuity and help the flor f room to room. You probably don't want it to be the dominant color in every room, but in the mix. You are working with sofIer and medium tones and using them differently in the differnt rooms. I don't think you are going to overdo it.

Not too much blue for me either! I think it's all going to flow really well, but then I'm partial to a bit of blue.....

In our new to us house we will be having blue in several rooms on the middle floor - we've chosen F&B Stiffkey Blue for the guest bedroom with Liberty Hera fabric curtains & bolster, the bathroom currently has light blue painted panelling and blue/cream/white mosaic tiles (inherited from PO but will keep blue of some kind there), office will have blue William Morris design cushions on the daybed and the snug (our evening tv/reading room) has turquoise in the rug, a chenille peacock throw on one sofa and blue enamelling on the sideboard hinges :) Makes sense to me to have continuity between the spaces - unlike our PO who had seven different coloured carpets on that level alone! Downstairs blues will also feature in the redesigned kitchen.

I think it would look beautiful, and I like when colors are carried through from room to room. I think if you vary the shades a bit, and the color is used in different ways on different elements, it's not too matchy or overwhelming.
