It seems that, if you want to continue the benefits of Web Shield, you should add the sites you are concerned about to the exclusions list and let Web Shield protect you from other stuff.

who the heck are all these new people and some of the things suggested here are not the ones you want please be careful we have had some trolls here lately trying to sell their junk. You can not run 2 antivirus programs at the same time if they are both running full time it will cause a conflict that is very well known and documented and will be told to you at any of the support forums you go to so you need to fully remove Norton since you now have AVG. go here and use app remove and the norton removal tool from the security garden link Antivirus Product Removal Tools Using AppRemover it is free spybot search and destroy was at one time very good but today there are some that are much preferred so I suggest replacing spybot and adaware with these free products, update them each time you use them and scan weekly with full scan. Have you tried popping (as I call it) to your new IP address which would be different from your Verizon IP address, now that you are using Cablevision? Now, I haven't done this in years, as I don't POP email anymore, but Outlook and your ISP should have very specific instructions on how to do this. If you are receiving your e-mail via an e-mail account with Cablevision, their FAQs should have the answer or just do a search for POP3 e-mail on their homepage. If you use IE, you should be able to go under tools and open port 10061 if your security software or modem have disabled it. If you are using a router, you can turn off Windows firewall, which will solve a ton of problems. Check your IE settings. IE thinks most people are too stupid to use the internet and has ludicrous default settings that stop everything from getting in but viruses. Also, it is imperative your modem and router are speaking the same language. On the surface, it would seem so as you can get online. However, you may have to let your router "phone home" and tell it to receive POP3 from the manufacturers diagnostic page. Your modem should be fairly open to the internet, it's the router that acts as a gatekeeper. A few more of the myriad of reasons I use gmail and Firefox. Ravencajun/genes: I cleaned up a few problems with TrendMicro but am not sure if that software works right. After cleaning some spyware, it went back to "Step 1: preparing" status/mode which I thought would be followed by yet another system scan in order to show that there was nothing on the PC then. But... it stayed "preparing" until I got tired of that and X'ed out the IE Window. It never went to Step 2 (scanning) or 3 (removing infections). Question #1: Did it do that to you too after it cleaned up infections? I also installed SpywareBlaster but was "left hanging". Maybe it is that I am not familiar with the program yet. Once it installed, I expected that it would scan my system but it just finished installing and that was that. Question #2: does install not scan your PC automatically? Then I looked for a way to force to scan my PC but did not find a way. All I managed to do was pick up some updates. My IE, restricted Sites and Mozilla Firefox Protection settings are set to 'Protection Enabled' with a status of 0 items have protection disabled. I am guessing that if it comes across some spyware because it is activated or downloaded or whatever, it will stop it; but if there was something already on the PC it will not tell me about it. Question #3: Is that right? Question #4: what do I do about IE7's crashes now? Do I need to delete it & reinstall it after those spyware infections were removed by TrendMicro? TIA, Luis

I knew I could disable across the board, but I'm glad to hear it's safe to just put in the exclusions for the sites I'm using that are getting blocked. Still curious why Avast web shield is now going into overdrive (I don't think a setting got changed). At least I can resume my activities and just allow exclusions that I need.

It's a little bit of work to set exclusions, but it is a good way to continue to be protected. I have found that some web sites, even very large and popular ones, sometimes lapse in keeping their certificates up-to-date and that can trigger what you have been experiencing.

I'm glad to hear that about even some major sites letting their certificates lapse. Without really understanding what a certificate is or how it's kept up-to-date, I imagined it was something like that - and not all these sites suddenly being unsafe.
