Virus Pop-Up When I Come to the KT

This is the 3rd time it's happened. My AVG says a virus had been detected everytime I come to the KT! Is that happening to anyone else?

In fact, it just happened again when I hit the Preview Message button!

I'm not sure what PrevX and Avast is.?

Ok, I'm gonna try this again, but prepare...it's long winded. For several weeks after the "train wreck" I was unable to log-in. I kept getting a message saying my password was incorrect. NOT! However I was able to re-register under a new name. When I tried to re-register under my old username, I got a message that the name was already taken. Ya think! I tried to email iV but heard nothing back. No doubt they were plenty busy trying to clean up the mess. My biggest beef about all this is that they didn't let folks know what they were doing beforehand, or that there MIGHT be a problem. I'm now able to log-in under my old username but I have chosen not to because I was using my regular email account. I tried to change my address to a hotmail account but when I submit the info and go back and look, my old email address is still there. After the new terms of agreement went into affect I didn't want to use my old email because "iV reserves the right to share my email addy with it's many affliates." OK not an exact quote but something to that effect. I don't want them to share my email address with anyone. Another beef I have is that my member page was wiped clean. Gone! Others with far more elaborate member pages than I have complained of the same. While I realize that iV has the right to change "what was once> gardenweb to their liking, I just don't like the way they went about it. So, now for the 1st time ever I'm seeing the obnoxious ads. I sometimes see full page animated ads that fill my entire screen. Some of them run for 2-3 minutes and I'm unable to escape. You can't go "back." I've seen ads with sexy men in skimpy underwear. A woman's nearly bare butt in my face. A golden retriever running back and forth across the screen. Then that foolish Crystal Lite ad with women dancing across the screen. When the ad finally ends it still doesn't go away but just sits there. Then they have the audacity to ask if I want to replay the ad. Oh sure, go ahead, bore me some more. I don't know what you're doing right but if you figure it out let me know, please. I've been visiting other gardening sites tho it's just not the same. I miss my old garden buds here. Lots of folks that are on dial up say the site is just too slow anymore. Fortunately I don't have that problem. Do you know that Dave's Garden had an increase in membership of 0.59%, or 1,165 people in just 7 days following the changes? New gardening forums have been created for the refugee's leaving GW. Last night when I tried to post this message and that full page ad appeared I, upon the advice of another GWer, tried to close it out. That's when I lost my message. So there you have it. I'm very sad as well and I miss the good ole days.

No flags in event viewer. I ran an avast scan. When the box comes up I noticed a Menu button that wasn't there before right under File (left corner); and when I opened it I saw Create Technical Report Restore Default Configuration Uninstall This Menu wasn't there before. Yah. There is something wrong with the web pages lately. I've have lost the right side scroll bar too, and not always with ads. I've had to excuse the page and reload it sometimes more than oce to correct the problem. I'd see the bar and then it would suddently disappear. I think it was a bad web page design. Here's a tip that helps protect you from getting hung up from a bad web page. When you wish to read a post, do it in a new window. Instead of left clicking on the post, right click and a drop down menu appears; Choose "open in new window". Once you have finished with the current window, close it by clicking in the "X" box or by right clicking on its icon in the tray and choosing "close". After you toss the current, temporary window away, the older window will show. Using this technique will allow you to toss away a bad page and return to where you were without having to restart the "That Home Site" page again.

I don't think so, but today I got something that looked like a legitimate virus scan, but when I looked more closely I could see that it was an ad. It was accompanied by a pop-up that I couldn't get rid of. I finally had to use Ctrl-Alt-Del to shut down my browser. A nuisance!

they are free virus and worm protection program, like AVG. we used to have AVG until i got a nasty virus surfing at TMZ lol avg caught it but we switched to those 2 programs that are more sophisticated ~ liz

I second what Sushipup said. Many of those alerts are malware. Shut down immediately and run a scan.

For the infected file name it says 'temporary internet files', I'd try deleting my temporary internet files and see if that helped.

I got it too, but I wasn't sure if I got it at TMZ or here, as I clicked from TMZ to KT quickly and got the message.

I ran a scan and didn't find anything.

I don't think I'll come back here for a while just in case.

You need to be dumping ALL of your cache and temp files on a regular basis. That takes care of a lot of issues. Run not only your antivirus but also run one or two anti-malware programs. I like Spybot and a-squared the best but Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware are pretty good too. Be sure you have all current Windows Updates and keep your antivirus and malware programs updated too. Spywareblaster is another good program to use.

And you're better off to stay away (far, far away) from Internet Explorer too. I'll bet the ones with these troubles are using the Internet Elephant.... Am I right?

I got it too. Both on exployer & firefox.
Ran a scan on AVG, said I an infection. Tried to get rid of it & it says object is inaccessible..Don't know what to do now.
I also went to another site, It popped up their too.

Hope someone can help

Cynic I am use Firefox only..I have scanned 5 ways to Sunday and haven't found anything on my computer. I dont know what is going on.

I ran several different scans last night before going to bed..AVG,SuperAntiSpyware, and MalAware..and neither of them found anything. Got up this morning and there's the WARNING again. Closed everything out, uninstalled AVG and installed Avast, ran a scan and nothing. I clicked on my link to the KT and so far the warning hasn't appeared!! Something, I'm not sure what..is going on here at GardenWed. I found this while I was doing a search on removal of whatever it is!

I ran scans for virus and malware last night, AVG removed one virus. I left KT. Came back this am, same box popped up saying there was a virus threat. I'm up to date on all virus and malware, just got my computer back a few weeks ago, and run updates daily. The only email I got from a KT'er, it was run thru my AVG and said no virus. Don't know where this is stemming from.

I have AVG. It said I had eight of that virus. I thought I had removed it, but came back here and it showed up again. I don't use Internet Explorer. I guess I need to find better security software.

Me too! Ran AVG and found 2 threats/viruses or whatever which were removed. What's going on???? Is it connected to GardenWeb?

Also, I have had an unusual number of viagra emails. I could block them but then I know I would miss emails I want.

I ran a whole system scan last night and it found nothing. Then I deleted all my temp. files. Now this morning I'm getting the "Resident" message. But my computer's running a lot faster.

I use Opera...zone alarm and ad aware...no problems...

Getting the same Alerts with IE and Firefox. I have run all my scans and only had 3 tracking cookies.

The odd thing is I have tried other GW forums such as Garden Party, Birding, Shrubs, etc. and the only one where I get the Alert is Computer Help.

Also I can't use the back button at KT or CompHelp.

So after I submit this I have to Exit.

Has anyone sent a message to iVillage? I will if I can get back in.

I hAd a nice communication from ivillage that they aware and are working on it. Something about avg tagging an ad as a threat. I would copy And paste their message but I don't know how on the iPhone.

So it's a link on one of their ads? I use Firefox and AdBlock, so I see no ads at all.

It has nothing to do with those of us that are using the Internet Elephant (by choice in my case) as you call it nor does it have anything to do with garden web or the antivirus or spybot or whatever everyone is using. I have firefox and other browsers. They are all doing the same thing. Cnet is reporting that AGV is experiencing a problem and it is not just at Garden Web.
a quote from them........."It is not infected. This is a problem with AVG and it is happening on other sites as well. AVG is notorious for false positives"

I have 3 PCs running Opera (with K-meleon, Firefox and Chrome as alternatives), AVG and no problems here.

There can easily be a false positive. Panda is notorious for it to the extent that I pulled it off any machine that would come through. Assuming it's a false pos, it should clear in an update or two. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't be taking the other precautions anyway.

Often something like this gives people a wakeup slap in the face reminder that's occasionally needed.

A while ago I finally put two and two together and realized I ONLY had problems with my PC after visiting GardenWeb.com.

Everything would be fine, and then, just after just one visit to GardenWeb.com, everything would go haywire with my computer. I thought the problem may have come from one of the threatening emails I often get from Gardenweb posters occasionally who disagree with me on some topic for some strange reason.

But I think now, that it is something to do with the GardenWeb site itself that is messing with my computer.

I had the same virus pop up 3 times last night and I also use AVG. AVG has been having issues lately. The latest is forcing your computer to reboot after every update. It's been VERY annoying.
