What is this bird?

I don't have a picture but here is the description: It's about the size of a sparrow, with a dark gray head and back and tail. Some striping on the wing tips and white on the underside. I live in Western NY state. Thank you.

Dark-eyed junco, perhaps?

I agree with atlamol:

Dark-eyed Juncos are beginning to appear for their winter stay. Some people call them snowbirds, saying their appearance means it's going to snow within a few weeks.

They are nature's garbage men! I live near a park with mature trees that is sandwiched at the intersection of two busy roads. The turkey vultures settle in on a garage roof across from the park a block from the intersection and just have a buffet! They are magnificent.

I've noticed that when they are less frightened and continue to stay, they might have a nest around.

Thank you. That link you sent me Claire certainly looks like it. How did I live so long and never see one before? Very pretty bird.

What was it doing? Could it be a nuthatch?
