Annie Sloan chalk paint: tips?

In about an hour, I'm heading over to the house to paint a couple of nightstands and our island in AS chalk paint. I've never done this before, but I've read a bit online. I'm excited, but also a bit worried as all these pieces are brand new, raw wood and rather expensive.

If anyone has advice, I'd love to hear it.

Oh for goodness sake, I meant to post this on home decorating. Not quite awake yet, I guess.

Even though you didn't mean to post here, my best advice is to have a great brush. The brush strokes will be minimal, and diminish with each coat.

Am finding this interesting as to ease of use and process. May be off topic, but I have always painted old furniture and even did the FP surround with acrylic craft paint. Buy the big bottles on sale, sometimes mix for a specific color wanted. The chalk paint almost looks/reads to be close to acrylic craft paint. Acrylic goes on beautifully and in one coat and goes a long way. I age items with regular stain (Minwax,etc). They have all held up well. I'd love to get the formula for chalk and acrylic craft paint to see a comparison. Enjoying the pics, love to see more of the great results. Amazing how good your projects turn out.

Hey, gang! Major delays in posting....lots of house projects...then, our sweet baby boy arrived, so I've been otherwise engaged. :) Just a quick picture or two while the boys nap. These are outdated but were the first I was able to find quickly. I'll find the updated pictures later when I have more time and will share them with you. Quick note: The paint/wax are holding up beautifully. I'm glad, though, with little hands around, that I went with a colored wax (made my own color). It's been SO nice to not have to worry when our just-turned-two year old bang something on a cabinet or touches it with hands fresh out of the sandbox. :) And, yes, we had our first goop get on it last week: spaghetti sauce, which wiped right off without issue. I was impressed. Again, i going "new," I'd not have done distressed/chalk paint/wax, but for our current situation, this stuff is working out beautifully. HUGE sigh of relief from this time/funding strapped momma. :) As for paint, it took less than two cans. Wax took almost two. I *think*...it's been a while and I've had a few other things on my mind lately. LOL! Yes, I painted the hardware. Someone previously put shellac over it, and I couldn't get it off. The paint is working out well there, too. What a great surprise!! In the wide view, you can see it was taken midway through the waxing. Look at the top cabinets, and you'll be able to tell the one on the left does not yet have the colored wax applied. It just has a first coat of the clear wax. And, for the record, my then pregnant self never climbed up and put the last coat (colored wax) on the cabinet above the fridge. One of these days.... :) There's just so much to do around here! Slow and steady (or not).

Are you using water based stain? What grit are you using to sand? A synthetic pad works best. Use a very light touch. Or, Try this method to remove the paint from the stain. Paint over the stained area with chalk paint and let it set for about 3 to 5 minutes. Using a dry paint brush and a cotton rag, gently brush away the chalk paint and wipe brush with rag, repeat until you're satisfied with stain exposure.

If you're going to keep it for now I'd paint is glossy red or the blue you posted above. It depends on what else is going on in your bathroom though. Doing that will give a different, fun look but won't make it really more modern or rustic because of the style. Maybe a white, but I wouldn't use chalk paint.

It's a terrible choice for a kitchen component. Wax is not a suitable protective covering for any area with real wear and tear. Anyone remember the old water rings on your grandmother's furniture? That is caused by moisture lifting the wax. Which will happen with the first time you need to wipe up anything from the island.?

If you want to custom paint your island, use something meant for it. Like Cabinet Coat. And sand and prime and do it properly.

I explored using chalk paint in my kitchen and read tons of reviews, blog posts, yada yada. It seems like about half loved it in their kitchens and the other half hated it. The ones who loved all seemed to be ones going for a distressed look in their kitchens. I decided against it because I don't want that look but if that's your goal, it may be just right for you. I'd sure do my own research first before committing the time to it.

I'm definitely a patina lover so I think it's going to work for me. I started with the nightstands and am almost done the painting. I'll have to save the waxing for tomorrow. I definitely had to do a clear coat over the knots, etc. in the wood. They bled through on the test side I did without a clear coat.

The wooden top on the island will be oiled (OSMO, I think) so I'm not worried about that holding up, but I'm still undecided about wax or poly over the rest of the island. I'll see how I like the look of the wax on the nightstands tomorrow.

We had the island custom made out of solid maple and it looks great from what I can see but kind of a funny story because I am the only one who hasn't really seen it yet. It was raining while they were delivering it so I stayed inside. Then they discovered it wouldn't fit through the door, took it apart before I saw it and then cabinet maker came back this morning while I was painting upstairs and put it back together. He wrapped it all up to protect it without telling me and so I still haven't seen it. Designer and contractor did see it and say it is gorgeous. I'll have to unwrap it to paint tomorrow and will finally get a peek.

Alternatively, milk paint might work. The friendly folks in my local wood store highly recommend General Finishes milk paint.
