Has El Nino turned into El Wimpo?
Comments (18)hoovb! Exactly! Eternal optimist here. I know we are in a drought, and many have it worse than us. We and our neighbors contracted to have our pot hole ridden private road paved, and guess what? It rained, and they couldn't pave. Project got delayed twice because of rain! And of course, rain a week ago and yesterday. But, only enough to turn the dust on the cars into a spotted mess. I worry because our soil is decomposed granite, and it drains so well, it does not stay wet. We are committed to 4" mulch, but we have so many grapevines and fruit trees, it's tough to keep the ground damp. Sigh. I should change my screen name to raindance! We should ALL change it to RainDance1 or 2 or 7001... Everyone in CA should! Suzi...See More36" rain. El Nino veggie garden recommendations
Comments (3)If you use soil with good drainage in a raised bed the rain shouldn't be a problem. Cool season veggies for this area are broccoli, kale, bok choy, Swiss chard (although this grows all year round), peas and cauliflower. I've tried brussel sprouts and don't think it gets cold enough here for them to form good heads, plus they are magnets for whiteflies and mealy bugs. Don't make your beds wider than 4 feet or you won't be able to reach the middle. The first rule of raised beds is don't step on the soil. I'm just a bit south of you, also in OC. Comments (9)I have a dog that also hates the rain and will try to put off going when it's 'pouring'. Showers, no problem, but downpours, no way! What we do is use a really large umbrella and hold it over him as he walks out to his spot and goes. I'm usually wearing a hooded jacket so I don't need to be under it. It may take a few times for your dog to get used to this large thing above your head but he'll probably catch on. Another option: for the back yard of cement you could put down a patch of astro-turf for dogs. Home Depot sells it and some of the pet stores. Or, if you can find it in your area this time of year, buy some sections of real sod and lay them directly on the concrete....See MoreEl Nino hit yet...?
Comments (13)ozmelodye... ...re the algae, yes it's external and someone told me about using the bleach method highlighted by stillanntn above, but what I use is a product originally from New Zealand called 'Wet and Forget'... it's not cheap, but all you do is mix 1 part to 5 parts water and use a garden sprayer, like you would spray your roses, and I spray all over the green, and after 3 hours it's all gone... however, I'm not sure yet how long it will stay away for... but it's very good stuff for this treatment... it can be used on all sorts of surfaces, including fences, caravans, boats, painted surfaces, walls etc.... ...I should add, they claim it's used on the Sydney Opera House... ...I'll get around to doing it when the weather clears up, it's terrible here right now, we've just had another major storm with lashing rain.... I'm going outside with torch to check there's no damage or temporary flooding... ...as for the 3 roses, I'd like to get them for my greenhouse to go with those I already have in there, just a few Tea roses... I don't know which ones as yet.... but they won't be for the garden proper so to speak.... if my greenhouse is still standing that is.......See Moreturnage (8a TX)
