Floor to Ceiling Stone Fireplace in New Construction

We are about to break ground on our new home but have some decisions to make about the fireplace. Since the house is a rustic mountain style home, I want a floor to ceiling stone fireplace but not woodburning. Our current home has a gas insert appliance with a high powered blower but the logs don't look realistic.

I really want the fireplace to "look" like a woodburning fireplace as I know there are nice realistic gas logs on the marketplace, but don't know enough about fireplaces to know if we really want another insert. I'm thinking larger (24 or 30 inch logs).

If anyone has any ideas or thoughts or suggestions, we are open to them!

Does Mendota look realistic to you? I think they look very realistic. How about someone like fireplacexordinaire? There are quite a few options. I looked for performance first on my fireplace. The options seemed pretty vast in the gas fireplace brands that I looked at.

There are many zero clearance gas burning units with gorgeous log sets and large viewing area that are great heaters. I would suggest checking out the Full View line from Mendota and the Envy from IHP, they both have large clean face viewing with broad heating range. Locate a local dealer and visit their showroom they should have burn models for you to view and brochures to take home.

the only time i have seen them in the floor here in the south is on crawlspace houses and trailers. it always seems to me that only the floor cools during the summer, whereas with ceiling registers teh cool air falls and gives a more even temp. heat rises, so during winter we always run a ceiling fan on low and reverse to even out the temps. down here we don't need much for heat anyway, so i think that is the reason for ceiling vents to be so predominant.

1/8" inch is the standard recommended gap by the APA for OSB unless the panel manufacturer recommends a different gap. However, there appear to be sheathing clips on your roof, which can work with a larger gap and are used to strengthen the roof when panel edges are unsupported, i.e., do not land on the roofing structure. Some jurisdictions may require these clips; they are a good idea in any case. You might want to check that the gap doesn't exceed the maximum for the clips being used and that the clips are correctly spaced. If you have a proper framing inspection in your jurisdiction, that's something the inspector should be knowledgeable about.

Thank you everyone for responding! Update: We are going to go pay more to have the ceiling painted a different color. Thank you for providing the encouragement to make that upgrade. As long as we like the 3 colors we choose (walls, ceiling, and trim), we'll be able to relax in our new home without feeling like we need to start painting right away. We need a break from making house decisions. We were surprised by the heavy ceiling texture. I actually called my husband and the builder in a panic when I saw it but it was too late. We were asked if we were okay with orange peel texture and were told that is what most people get so we said ok without looking into it. Is there something we should keep in mind when choosing paint if we want to down-play the texture? We are getting more samples and I will post again, either once we are done (I can dream) or if I need your help again. He he also frequently organized the entry so that visitors were required to turn a ninety-degree angle before they could arrive at the living room. The change in ceiling height and in direction combined together strengthened the effect of moving from one space to the other. Ok I just impressed myself. LOL. I had done the height difference because I knew how it changed perception but didn't know he also did the 90 degree thing which I did in my house. (Of course I'm not about to admit that might not have been deliberate)

stelmoqn- we are currently in the same situation as you- beginning our new build and want a real wood fireplace look with the convenience of gas logs. We put in a wood burning box and chimney (non-masonary) and had a gas line run to it. We'll pick out a gas log set and have it hooked up. We were told by the company we're using that this is not a very efficient method, as we'll lose a lot of heat through the chimney, but we'll achieve the look we want. HTH

Gas logs and gas stoves are totally different. My Mendota is being installed on Friday so I will take some pictures. The functionality of a stove is so much better. A friend has the Fireplace Xordinaire and you can turn off the heat for the whole bottom level when using it. They put out that much heat and are really realistic looking. I liked the Mendota better but these are both great units.

Or instead of using a gas insert like above^ you could go with a vent less fireplace system. Isokerns are top my top choice for brand.
