Heptacodium miconiodes 'Seven Son Flower' tree
Comments (2)Zone 7 is near the middle of that species hardiness-zone range. You'll find about a dozen threads here in the Trees Forum about it or at least mentioning it, but be sure to spell it correctly (Heptacodium miconioides) to search for the results. You can also find a lot of info with a simple Google search. If there's any specific info that you don't find that way, just ask. Comments (17)I planted mine as a 1 gallon plant, which was about 2' tall. It shot up to about 14' within 2 years and it's planted in clay soil. I did water mine regularly for the first year, but other than that I didn't do anything special for it. It seems to be a very tough plant well adapted to my location and needs no extra watering or other attention from me so far. Mine is now around 20' tall and it was absolutely smothered in butterflies for 2 weeks back in early September when it was in peak flowering. The fragrance has been subtle, but very pleasant when I was within about 30' or so of it. The peeling bark didn't really start to be showy on my tree until it was about 3 or 4 years old. I'd say this plant naturally(at least in Eastern North America) wants to be a small tree, rather than a shrub. Mine put up 2 primary trunks, along with a couple of other smaller ones, which I pruned out after the 3rd year. So, I'd say let yours grow however it wants to and after a couple of years pick out the strongest 2 or 3 trunks and trim out the others. You can also limb it up after it gets some height if you want to really make it look tree like and show off the peeling bark....See MoreHave your seven son flower trees produced their seed yet??
Comments (3)Perennialfan, Thanks for the offer. No postage necessary, remembering is the necessary part, LOL. I also appreciate your offer of sending me something, also not necessary. I am DONE planting anything this year. I'm just too tired. I looked at my trees today when I went home for lunch. Most have half their flowers open and the other half aren't. So it may be a while. I've never paid attention so I'm not sure how long from flower to seed. Does anybody out there know? Also, we're suppose to be at 32 degrees some time this week, will that affect seed production? Comments (7)Thank you Puglvr!! I'm glad you liked my little tree! :) I hope you and your loooovely gardenias and your puppies have a super duper Christmas! Butterfly, I'm really glad you liked my tree too! Hopefully next year I can put an ornament on it! :D Yes, Santa has some presents for my kiddie, he's been pretty good this year. :) LOL, I'd be afraid of putting Christmas lights on those gardenias, with my luck they would be Atheist and be offended that I did that, and then would punish me by dying on the spot, lol! I hope everyone has a great Christmas and Happy New Year! Let's hope that I'll be posting a picture of a gardenia bloom soon..lol! Yeah, RIGHT, ha ha! What AM I thinking?? :D Peace, everyone!...See MoreDingo2001 - Z5 Chicagoland
