Japanese maples come up in gardens here but seldom in the woods, as our summers are dry. Any kind of tree with orange or red fall color may be yellow in full shade. Silver maples here often have a mix of colors that can be quite nice, streaks or sections of purple, red, maybe orange and yellow. Green Norway maples growing in the open here often have quite a bit of orange and red on the outside; there is a grafted cultivar seen in plantings here that is consistently all yellow in fall. A larger solitary Norway maple in a northwest WA community actually blazes in fall. A friend who grew up in Illinois said there was a Norway maple and a sugar maple nearby, these behaved as though trading off which one was conspicuous in a given fall. Recently volunteers have started clearing Norway maple saplings out of a wooded ravine in a Seattle park. The numbers of these that were becoming established was positively frightening. Elsewhere here it is not usual in my experience to see such intense infestation - so far. I do know of a drier evergreen forest park site north of Seattle where too many have been coming up, but nothing like in the one moister, probably more fertile location. During one segment in a fictional cop TV show I've watched the detectives go out to a local wooded site to look at a crime scene. It was during a time when the trees where not in leaf, as far as I could see just about every tree, small and larger was a Norway maple.

Happy to weigh in. I previously lived in Maryland Z7 for 5+ years b/f moving to PNW, and became Japanese Maple fan, growing several varieties, including Shishigashira, Waterfall, Tamakeyuma. I believe in a hot climate (Maryland), Japanese Maples do best with limited wind exposure (some type of screening really helps), and some (but not too much) sun exposure--from 3 to 6 hours would be ideal. When U get more sun (8 hours+), in a hot climate U R askin for leaf burn & stress. Stress factors (excess heat & drying wind) become more critical with the laceleafs/dissectums, which have more surface area exposed with their thin leaves (and R thus, more susceptible to leaf burn). In exposed spots in a hot climate, I would stick with larger-leafed varieties (whether green or red). I would plant a laceleaf/dissectum in more-favorable, sheltered spots (180% or more) of wind-screen protection with some sun, but limited sun exposure. I had great success with a Tamekuyama dissectum, situated against the house (and shielded on another side by bamboo), so his wind-shielding was probably 270% or so, with 4-5 hours of morning sun. Remember, though, this was probably near ideal situation for this maple, but he seemed very happy, and handled the tuff drought-ridden MD summers well.

I concur with GG but I think SG's question had to do ...not with FINDING a specimen... but with identifying one they already have...but this is not clear... If the later is the case it could be almost anything including a genric non grafted mongral...the slender leaves "could" rule out red dragon but it depends on their definition of slender ...same goes with several others including inaba depending on their definition of crimson ..( inaba is NOT crimson in fall it's dark red as wwell as tamaka and s depending on soil climate etc it may be more or less dark to crimsom!!!) Again First we need to know if we are on a finding or identifying "expedition" If finding GG has laid out some good choices to LOOK at ...if identifying ...as I thought it was ...a picture is necessary but ultimatly it would most likely be a guess ...more or less educated depending on who responds and you will NEVER know for sure IMHO...David
