Bread toasters, microwave ovens and the like are prone to grease and dirt and so it is important to take the time to clean them up after use to prevent further problems in the future. When used cooking oil is not properly removed, it can leave nasty stain on wall, oven pans and counter-tops. Much worse, when grease is stuck in drainage pipes, this can cause clogging. As I recall, glass etching uses an acid. Here in York Haven, PA, our water is loaded with minerals and acids, causing problems. So, the idea is not to use this crap, but rainwater, even that may be too acid and might need treatment. Dale has an excellent idea, the Permatex hand cleaner has "gut", as does Go-Jo, which is also a good short term lubricant. I've found that after dish washing with dirty hands(grime, grease, grit) that my hands end up "squeaky clean" using Dawn or the equivalent, I also use bleach in the dish water - is that ever a powerful cleaner! Some of these so-called "eco" products have little power to really clean... are "too easy" on the hands... But its the very hot water that does the trick...the hotter the better..

It's not terribly difficult to put up new drywall (drywall = sheetrock, same thing). You'll have to get out what's left first, hard to tell what kind of job that will be. Then you tape the seams and put a little mud on them, and you're good to go for new tile. Tile does need a smooth surface, though, and is pretty unforgiving, so I think you're pretty much stuck doing the new sheetrock yourself or having someone else do it -- I don't think you can patch that many holes and then put the weight of the tile on top of them without risking the patches falling out.

I donno, knee pads and gloves? Yea, I would opt for the basement. I love me some basement. I will probably still love me some basement when I am old. Will make me keep doing stairs. Anyways, you will either have to insulate the floor joists or insulate the crawl space walls and condition it as well. I wouldnt particuarly like it to be dirt down there, would most likely do a rat slab. If you cant do a basement and are doing a slab, maybe you should just do a slab floor and build storage elsewhere. Might be more efficient. Just some ideas. Your in WI? Usually the central air/heating is found in the basement and ductwork is in the conditioned space (basement and first floor joists). Otherwise you have to run the ductwork inside the house taking up space. HVAC typically is not done in attic up north, considering condensate freezing up in vented attics. Most attics are not sealed up or conditioned in the north either, that is usually found down south.
