Bread toasters, microwave ovens and the like are prone to grease and dirt and so it is important to take the time to clean them up after use to prevent further problems in the future. When used cooking oil is not properly removed, it can leave nasty stain on wall, oven pans and counter-tops. Much worse, when grease is stuck in drainage pipes, this can cause clogging. I ordered the EdFred glass shower cleaner shown on Muchfun's link and tried it. It took a lot of elbow grease and I had to go over the shower door and wall a couple of times. Applied it with a Scotchbrite pad. I can't believe it actually worked. It was 10 years of hard water build-up. I tried everything imaginable to clean it and nothing worked. I even tried, over the years, using a razor blade to scrape it off and that didn't even work. I will be applying the Rain-X today and hope I can get DH to wipe down the door and wall after showering. Will also get some shower gel or use liquid soap. I sure hope that is the end of this very vexing problem.

Depending on the dish, you may find that using a rondeau or dutch oven is helpful in reducing the grease spatter when sautéing. The higher walls block more of it than low skillets or sauté pans. You just want to make sure that the meat isn't crowded but also that the surface area of the pan isn't so large that it makes it difficult to make a pan sauce. That, in combination with the screen, may work for you. I'm 44 and have only taken a real interest in cooking within the last couple of years. I could cook and everything tasted good, with only a few fails! I didn't think it was fun, though. I've become BBSTX's second paragraph! I bake the sandwich bread (among other things) for the kids because I read the label - yuck. I can't get one to eat anything but soft white and I refuse to buy that crud, so I make a really yummy alternative. I make my own mayo, also because I read the label, LOL! Ridiculously easy if you have an immersion blender. And I don't have a jar sitting around forever because I make a cup at a time, when needed. Really, I was bored with the drudgery that feeding 5 people had become and needed an injection of creativity. I love to try new things and my family is moderately adventurous so now I actually like to cook. At least, when I'm trying out a new recipe or have a new piece of equipment. Oh, and I like really tasty food without the cost of eating out. I recommend checking out Ina Garten's cookbooks from your library. The pictures are gorgeous, which helps pique interest, and the recipes are almost fool-proof. Everything I've tried has been delicious. I've learned a lot about equipment and ingredients here and at Chowhound. Learning about and using tools that help me succeed has made a big difference for me because I LIKE tools. You can work with anything, but I want things that make it easier!

I donno, knee pads and gloves? Yea, I would opt for the basement. I love me some basement. I will probably still love me some basement when I am old. Will make me keep doing stairs. Anyways, you will either have to insulate the floor joists or insulate the crawl space walls and condition it as well. I wouldnt particuarly like it to be dirt down there, would most likely do a rat slab. If you cant do a basement and are doing a slab, maybe you should just do a slab floor and build storage elsewhere. Might be more efficient. Just some ideas. Your in WI? Usually the central air/heating is found in the basement and ductwork is in the conditioned space (basement and first floor joists). Otherwise you have to run the ductwork inside the house taking up space. HVAC typically is not done in attic up north, considering condensate freezing up in vented attics. Most attics are not sealed up or conditioned in the north either, that is usually found down south.
