Sealant for 1930s brick house - mason-recommended, but a smart idea?

Hi, we recently purchased a 1937 brick colonial that is getting some necessary masonry work done this fall. Our mason (friend of a friend, but new to the house) is recommending that after the Northeast winter, we apply a sealant around the entire house in order to prevent potential future water damage. However, with the exception of areas around a kitchen bay window, the house has not suffered past water damage and I am concerned that applying a sealant will not only lead to other future issues but also increase my future maintenance costs.

Masons and brick home owners out there - what do you think? Has anyone applied sealant to an old house and been happy he or she did?

Thanks so much for sharing your experiences!
