What kind of tile do I put on the outside of shower threshold?

Hi,

Do I carry the white subway tile that was used on he shower walls, or do I use the porcelain tile from my floors?

I'd use the shower wall tile and a solid surface sill.

That's what I did for my current shower. Shower wall tile and a solid surface sill. Can you post photos of your shower after you are done. I am in the process of getting all my stuff together for my bathroom reno and am planning on using large rectangular white tiles in my shower too.

I believe the "membrane" the OP is talking about going 6 - 8" up the wall is probably the shower pan liner. As long as there is a vapor barrier behind the durock, this may still be a perfectly acceptable shower install. If this is the case, telling the OP that a topical membrane on top of the durock is necessary is just plane bad advice. It might be good to ask more questions and make sure we actually understand the install before telling the OP the shower install is not acceptable. It is possible we are dealing with nothing more than a case of ignorance on the part of the OP and incorrect terminology causing confusion. So: 1. Was a layer of plastic(vapor barrier) installed behind the durock? Don't guess - ASK. 2. Is the membrane the tile guy spoke of a thick, typically gray, piece of rubbery plastic? If so, this is a shower pan liner and durock should be installed afterward and overlap it. 3. What sort of warranty does the tile installer offer?

I just purchased Ginger Splashables shower baskets for both my master and hall bath. My husband does not want niches at all. We are going for the hotel look with polished chrome wire baskets. The hall bath has the typical shower/tub combo. We planned to put the 18" shower basket in the center of the long wall.....I hope that look isn't outdated as raehelen mentioned! But I do think the shower spray will hit the soap. I am thinking of alternative locations for it, possibly on the short wall where the showerhead and tub spout is. Not sure if it will look too busy since there will also be a handheld on hook located there too. Any ideas? I attached a pic of the shower basket. Ginger products are supposed to be well made. I think they are pricey but I was concerned about rusting. Ginger online prices are much less than local stores. I ordered mine on qualitybath dot com. They had the lowest prices when you add their 5% sale. Good luck! My Ginger products get delivered this Thursday.

These are bathroom walls that are not in the shower, ie, not wet areas? For standard drywall with a standard finish, there aren't any additional restrictions that I'm aware of, unless you have state/local rules that are more restrictive than national. Regarding gypsum board in a non-wet area of the bathroom, you can use regular gypsum board. Or any "specialty" version of it; moisture resistant, mildew resistant, etc. If you are painting, then some of the paperless boards can show a texture when compared to a paper board. Paper-faced boards generally paint smoother. There is a restriction for MR board installed on ceilings via IRC E702.3.8. If you use 1/2" MR drywall on a ceiling, the maximum spacing for framing is 12". To get to 12", most folk will strap the existing 16", 19.2", or 24" ceiling joists with lathe or furring strips run perpendicular to the joists, with the furring strips themselves at 12" on center. Furring strips need to be 1" thick and have a minimum width of 2" (or 3/4" by 1-1/2" minimum when you hit them with your tape measure). If you're planning on textured finish, or plaster, etc, there are board thickness restrictions to ensure that the board can support the finish. If you're planning something out of the ordinary, your best bet would be to read through IRC R702 and see if anything applies to your situation. That'll give you national code. Your state and local code may be available online, or call your local AHJ and they can fill you in. But in general? For standard construction with standard finishes? Regular drywall can be used on the walls and ceilings of the bathroom outside of the shower. The only gypsum board restrictions that affect most people are for wet areas like tile backer board in a wet area like a tiled shower or a tiled tub surrounds. Hope that helps.

So there will be a height differential between the two floors? If not, you could just have the wood go right up to the tile floor. Sorry if I am not explaining this well, but our tile and wood floor meet in the doorway with no threshold. Assuming there is a height difference, I probably would choose a wood threshold -- unless you want to use a different material for visibility? Hope others will chime in with suggestions for you. xmkx: yes, I'll post pictures. Our floor tiles are 12x24 porcelain, light grey'ish with veins of taupe and white..

According to our tile guy, you could use either one. We used the shower surround tile, which is a glossy white, and blends in more with the white cast iron shower receptor (pan) than the light walnut travertine floor tile would have.

I would use the subway on curb front. and a greyish 2cm marble or solid surface threshold/sil that ties into floor tile..

I took the white subway tiles and our porcelain floor tiles and propped them up to get a idea. Don't know why I didn't think of that before. Our floors are not in yet, so it was a bit hard to visualize. We are using quartz for our thresholds and shower jambs, so in our bathroom, the porcelain tiles for the floor look better.

Our tiler chose to use the shower tile (color: stream). I think the floor tile would have looked better, but I didn't ask him to change it. The floor tile is a bit more grey and uniform in color; the shower tile has a good bit of variation in the sand-to-gray scale. The sill is a solid surface. The wall color is Pashmina, a BM Affinity color.

abbycat9990 - I think the shower tile looks just as nice. Thanks for the photo. Our porcelain tile is a bit similar to yours. Ours is grey with minute veins of taupe. Pashmina is a nice color. We used Revere Pewter in our bathroom.

In our former home, not a great shot, but we used our floor tile on the front and the quartz from our vanity countertop for the threshold.
