Help! My sempervivum is struggling!
Comments (4)Your soil is too heavy and the temps are too hot. As Jeff mentioned, it needs a cooler spot with bright light. The brightest light indoors is still very shady compared to bright shade outdoors, so your plants are stretching for more light. Comments (11)Spruceman only checks in with us here very occasionally, but yes, his Norway spruce experience and advice is unparalleled. One thing that jumped out in OPs old original post is the paucity of sunlight-only 3 hrs. per day-falling on his trees. Combine that with close competition from larger and more well-established pines nearby, and it seems there would be some struggle here. Neverthelss, these tree species are very compatible, both having roughly the same requirements as well as growth rates (fast). I'd look to carefully trim some branches if any are especially inhibiting the newer trees. I'd pay attention to water needs as the older, more established plants are going to hog it up. And please, do not buy "fertilizer spikes". They are a bad idea whose time has come.......and gone. +oM...See MorePlease save my sempervivums!
Comments (9)I'd i were to make a guess based on what you are saying I would say that your plant started to bloom. If you cut the bloom off before it flowered it is likely it will start to put out more flowers. Some of the chicks might start to flower too. I have a pot of semps where the momma and the babies all started to flower at the same time. They are monocarpic which means they die after they flower. But it takes awhile for them to flower and once they flower they last a good bit of time. I'm kind of upset because no bees have visited my plants this year so no seeds. I don't know if it's from the heat we've been getting but even earlier in spring I noticed way less bees in the garden and I use no pesticides and no pesticides have been used on the property for years. This has also been the case in other gardens I've been working in, in my area. Maybe it's from such a cold wet winter? Anyway, post a pic so we can stop guessing. also unlike bunkfrees flower pic, sometimes their is more space between the nodes when they start to flower so it looks like they are stretching. Comments (7)S M You didn't say what your general location and/or growing zone is? Nik is in warm climate and semps do not like that much heat and humidity - they will grow, but prefer bit milder climate. That is the reason why it took so long to root. What Nik did is correct - cut off all rot, set it on gritty substrate (do not worry about burying it) and unless stem has rotted thruout, it will evetualy root. They are Alpines, should get some winter rest; and many ppl in zones 9 and higher need to keep them in bit shadier and preferably cooler locations if possible. In my conditions, they do not have problem with rooting much faster. They grow outdoors, in ground or containers. They need very well draining mix especially in pots - and all I see is peat (or cocopeat?) in yours. They will rot if constantly wet. There is about 5cm of snow outside right now, I'll try to see if I can take some pics......See MoreCristina
