I've seen some "tiny houses" that I like a lot but this one is tiny to the extreme. I think I would get claustrophobic in this one.

I've seen that one before on-line, and how exciting would that get with our horrible windy days (like today with gusts up to 41 mph) here in Kansas. The proverbial "rock and roll" :-O. I do love the energy efficiency....

I wonder if the designer watched "Mork from Ork" since it reminded me of Merth's (played by Jonathan Winters) egg.

That's essentially the size of the storage shed in my back yard. I sure could live in a much smaller place than I have now, but not in what is not much more than a fishhouse for ice fishing! But the little wind turbine would be nice to have in the fishhouse.

But on the bright side, you couldn't be much of a "hoarder" in there!

Our pop-up camper is bigger than that. I get pretty cranky after a week. The facilities are too limited. I need a better shower and a bath.

I have more space than I need I admit, but I earned every square foot and appreciate all of it. I lived in a smaller home for many years. The one in the link is barely a hamster cage ;) You could put me there at waters edge someplace for a couple of days in nice weather where I could step outside to breathe, never to live.

I've seen a lot of the "tiny houses" they build on utility trailers. Most are very inefficient in their use of space and resources. This one looks quite well designed. I like that it has wind and solar power, and rainwater collection, without compromising the design. And no matter how much it looks like it would blow away, that's better than a slab sided one with a high center of gravity that would just blow over. Round does well in the wind. Maybe not well enough, but well. Compared to a self-contained teardrop trailer this seems quite pleasant. The teardrop is probably roomier, but not as sturdy. Hm....nope. The ecocapsule is a lot bigger than the teardrop. The bathroom is certainly nicer than a cassette!

If it's mobile, how is it different from an RV? Speaking of storage sheds, when we had ours installed earlier this year, the guy was saying how a lot of people buy theirs and finish them out to use as housing for camp sites. I thought that was a cool idea especially if one with a loft was used.

The biggest difference are the integrated off grid features (solar and wind power, and rainwater catchment). It also doesn't appear to be a vehicle--no chassis, wheels, lights, brakes. Rather, it's a transportable pod. It's also slightly narrower, to be able to fit inside a shipping container. It looks to be a lot sturdier than a similarly sized travel trailer. The kitchen is super minimal, more like what you'd find in a VW camper bus than a travel trailer. Eating isn't a priority. The clothes storage is also minimal--I didn't see a hanging wardrobe. There is a fixed desk, however. I didn't get far enough in to see if they discussed the waste plumbing, but it's supposed to be able to go for months off grid, so I assume it's a composting toilet. Not sure if it filters gray water, or just dumps it into nature. The freshwater storage is below the floor, as usual, but the cutaway shows a wide, flat tank, rather than a cylinder, but then there's no chassis to fit it into. It is meant as a work shelter you can eat, sleep and wash in, rather than as a home. They've geared it toward scientists doing field work. The desk looks right out the big picture window, which would be ideal for observation studies.

The storage shed as camp shack sounds like a great idea! A sturdy structure is a sturdy structure, and a reasonably sized one should fit k/d in a pickup truck.

I don't understand the new fascination with tiny houses--it isn't as if people haven't been living in trailers for a long, long time! But I have to admit this entry is pretty dang cute! I could see myself being fine with a space this size, if I were traveling. But it really would be a for "1". Well, maybe a small companion pet, too. ;)

Ten feet by ten point seven feet? About a sixth of it taken up by a bed, even if foldable in between ... but it still takes up space ... or have they learned how to sleep while standing up ... with a belt around the head, tied to a strap going under the chin ... and the whole gizmo attached to a hook in the ceiling?

Yes, but it's meant to be a minimal shelter! Not a house. It's meant, basically, to be a few steps up from a tent, and self contained. They specifically said for researchers who have to be in remote, off grid places for six months at a time. Think grad student.

The tiny house thing is a fad. People like the ones on wheels because they can be self-built cheap. The problem is that they're not legal in most places other than rural fields. Many of them are street legal as vehicles, which is the point--people get out of housing codes by declaring it a trailer. But in many--most?--municipalities, it's illegal to live in a travel trailer, outside of a zoned RV park, but RV parks, probably for insurance reasons, don't usually allow self built RVs. They require licensed RV builders to build them. There are a few licensed RV builders who will inspect and certify a self built, but that's really really rare. So most are illegal dwellings, like any shack, and move from backyard to backyard, as the neighbors complain. Or else they're in the country, where no one's worried that if they blow themselves up, they'll take all the neighbors with them.

I think it looks like a great alternative to a tent. I love that it seems to be almost completely self-sustaining.

A little off-topic, but recently someone illegally parked their pop-up camper on a vacant lot in our neighborhood. As a result, the owner had to put up a fence across the front of the property to deny access. I think it's sad that some don't honor the concept of private property.

For long term living, you may be right, although tiny abodes in the way of studio apartments are thriving all over the world. But the pictured little pod is a cute and compact place to spend a weekend, fishing, or as extra room as a guest house for overnight, and I think such small places have come to stay.

Lucille, I totally agree. "Tiny house" as a phrase, generally refers to the ones, usually built on utility trailers, though sometimes fixed, that are like regular RVs or mobile homes, made out of reclaimed or standard building materials. For the last short while, some RV and mobile home makers have started producing some that look like the made-it-myself cabin on wheels, but are actually made of insulated panels, etc., that are better suited. There are tiny house shows on TV that stretch the definition to include apartments and somewhat larger alternative builds, and really anything they find interesting. "Tiny house" implies an actual house shaped house that requires a plot of land to park it on, so even if the construction was repurposed/ecofriendly, as land use it's a fail compared to any kind of apartment.

Even though it's a pod, and doesn't look like a house, I do think that the transportable shelter we're talking about counts as a "tiny house" because it's so small and transportable.

Small dwellings, are another story. People have been living in them forever, and the McMansion was a passing trend.
