I am so BORED already. And it's just started.
Comments (43)Glad to read I'm not the only one feeling crazy over winter... I'm just about finished with choosing seeds, am looking to purchase a new load of topsoil (for my raised beds) and wishing the snow and ice would disappear... I have an assortment of veggies growing in low hoop houses - but the temps have been so cold, I haven't looked inside since the big storm on Sunday. The snow and ice didn't damage the hoops, so perhaps my salad bar will be ok. So far, we're harvesting lettuces, various greens, beets, carrots, chard, radishes, cabbage, but the broccoli has given up. Pn - I'm interested in your minerals seminar - any links? And fascinated to hear that I might be able to overwinter fava beans - can't say I'm a huge fan, but maybe they taste better from the garden. :) Thanks, Cindy...See MoreDid I just kill my bean plants with Liquid Fence?
Comments (18)I sprayed Liquid Fence on my Liatris and coreopsis, which deer, rabbits and gorundhogs also love a few weeks ago. My liatris have turned black on some sprouts and 2 of the coreopsis plants are half black now. I'm very disappointed because they were doing amazingly well before I sprayed them. I shook the bottle each time I used them. Sigh. I hope I haven't killed them. Meanwhile, the Liquid Fence worked!...See MoreI can't be killing my Bougainvillea bonzai already!
Comments (18)So are you saying this boug I have will definitely shed its leaves and go into dormancy? Aww. I'm so spoiled by my tropicals-esp my jasmines that bloom for me all year through. But if it keeps coming back- I'll give it a try. So I take it then that the dormancy is not 'required' as such but it's just what it naturally does when its winter here? Toni, it's not a bonsai. I have it hanging at the moment by a nice sunny window. I'm not sure how cool the window gets in the winter- I can't remember now but generally my entire apt is very very warm in the winters and there's no way I can provide the boug a 'cool' spot as such. I'm having problems with my clivia for the same reasons. But thanks so much all of you for all your advice. I'm so glad I learned about the watering because if you guys hadn't mentioned that to me, I'd be merrily watering it like my tropicals....See MoreHave I killed my persimmon already?
Comments (4)Persimmons are a strange duck (Ebony family). You have heard of chill hours? In addition to modest chill hours, they need heat hours...a need for a certain number of accumulating heat units before they break dormancy. I found this out in Jan-Feb when I was removing all the trees that had died from the previous dormant planting, i.e, that never broke dormancy or were duds and whose few leaves shriveled up in the heat. When I pulled up the "dead" Coffeecake persimmon (Nishimura Wase) [see like you, I should have checked to see if it was green under the bark rather than assuming] there was an incredible healthy appearing root system present. Turned out fine. So if you do pull it up be prepared to either put it back or transplant it to a container in case it is still very much alive. The last of the trees at a nursery are often in pretty bad shape. And it does sound like you may not have watered it enough...but it is still alive so there is hope in the spring. Here is a link that might be useful: see note on heat units This post was edited by Fascist_Nation on Mon, Nov 4, 13 at 9:52...See Morejane__ny
