Rose rosette in a layer of an enormous rose

I have very large, very old Dr. Van Fleet which has layered itself. One of the layers is afflicted with rose rosette disease. The diseased canes are underneath healthy ones, so I only saw the extent of the problem when I was fighting my way in to pull out some weed vines.
Digging out the whole rose would be impossible (and heartbreaking). My plan is to try to remove the whole layer and its roots. I doubt I can get all the roots.
How far shall I cut back the connection between the sick part and the healthy main bush, assuming I can find it? When I cut out the diseased canes they will touch healthy ones. Can the virus spread just by contact with the leaves, or must the mites themselves jump onto healthy canes to spread it?
Your ideas are much appreciated.
