Fastest growing palm for my climate

Hi, i live in southest Greece, i don't know exactly what zone is, somewhere between 8b and 9a, the climate is mediterranean. I want a pinnate-leaved type palm. I will buy it at 15-25 litre pot. Which of the three do you think is the fastest growing for my climate:

Canary island palm

Medjool palm (phoenix dactylifera)

Jubaea chilensis palm

I know jubaeas are the hardiest and most ideal for my climate but slow growing, while the other two are faster growing but not ideal for my climate so their growth will not be too fast espesialy if you keep in mind the frost damage.

What do you guys think?

CIDP would win. They are big massive palms,that do well in all ranges of Med climates. Medjools, are hit and miss. Slow to start. CIDP or a Queen palm although the Queen needs much summer water to add those trunk feet. Still,its the fastest growing palm you can get.

In the town i live there are a lot of canary palms, they have grown noticeably from last year. Although the last winter was one of the coldest, one night we had -10C ( 14F ). Of course they got some leaf damage.

But i like too much jubaeas, do you think they are a lot slower that CIDP ?

ive left posts on all kinds of sites..and no offers of m.ingens seed..:( my understanding it doesnt pup..bummer.. so a MONSTER plant or seed are only options.. i know there have been a couple people over on bananas.org that have germinated and grown m.ingens.. one guy is in hawaii..so you would think close to idea.. i dont think he was sucessful getting a mature plant..:( that doesnt stop me wanting one..or 2 though..:) i know alittle of the culture for growing m.ingens.. they dont like extreme heat..or high humidity. in nature they grow in mountains so they must like "coolish" nites and i have read..where i cant remember..they may have a symbiotic relationship with a soil bacteria/fungus ..to do well.. again..that doesnt deter me from wanting it..lol what we are willing to do for our beloved plants.. srewolf.. if u find a source for viable m.ingens seed..hope u will share the info...:) good luck...

In order...fastest to slowest growing palms

For zone 7b, I'd say in order of fastest to slowest (this is just a guess--a lot depends on siting, soil conditions, degree of protection for the less hardy ones, etc): 1) Trachy 2) Butia (with protection) 3) Sabal palmetto (will need protection) 4) Sabal Brazoria (protection) 5) Needle 6) Sabal minor 7) Sago (with protection) But you don't just want palms that grow fast, you want palms that are hardy and will survive. For sure things, go with Trachy, Sabal minor and needles. If you have a very warm microclimate, I'd give Sabal palmetto a try. Visit Plant Delights site for hardier strains.

My Trachys are definitely the fastest (2 fronds on the one in shade and at least 3 on the others), and my Sabal Minor is also a fast one (I think 2 fronds from that one). My coconut palm just about finished its first frond of the year and is quickly working on its second (maybe I'll get 4 fronds from it by the end of the summer). My Slowest is my Butia which never grows at all (its alive since its been green for a year and has no spear pull or rotting at all). My butia in full sun (just planted in the ground this year) finished its first frond quickly and is now on its second. I might abandon my other one and protect this one instead. My fastest plants are by far the elephant ears, bananas, brugmansia, and cardinal vine. -Alex

Plastic for weed control if you need it. My plots are small enough to manage. You can get a little extra time into starting your peppers under plastic, but it's usually not a big advantage. It's main advantage is weed control...it's main disadvantage is running irrigation under it.

Jubaeas are much slower growing. Hardy..they can get by on little summer water. It might take 20 years for them to be over a man's head in height. Still,they take much cold and to me at all sizes look regal. Small ones are like green cycads. Large ones- we have two here that were planted in 1874- are just awesome sights to behold.

btw,The Medjool should also be faster growing and even more drought tolerant. As always with even desert palms- the more water the faster they grow.

You are right jubaeas unlike other palms, looks good even when they are small. I think the solution is to buy the biggest you can buy, i read the bigger they are the faster they grow. But they are so damn expensive.
