I want a living shredder. What should I be looking for?

I hear shredding material before composting can help it break down faster, and I know from experience that big pieces in the pile are a pain in the posterior to turn.

My available time and energy won't let me do too much manual shredding, and I don't have the budget to buy a shredding tool.

I expect there are living creatures, plants or fungi that can do the work for me, and will work for food. That's where the question comes in. What kinds of organisms might I introduce to my compost heap to help with breaking down big tough pieces into little flimsy pieces?

The heap is already crawling with isopods, I hear they're good for cellulose-heavy materials.

I'm in northern Georgia (US) if that helps with determining the right way to go.
