Have: Oxalis 'Iron Cross' and oxalis triangularis bulbs in London area

I just harvested my oxalis and have way too many for myself. If you live in the London area and you have something pretty (almost anything...prefer flowering plants) lets do a trade. :) I am interested in gloxinia or maybe you bought way too many spring flowering bulbs from Costco... :)

Oops, I forget to harvest mine......Wish it's not too late......May I ask how to storage them?

I just pot them up in a potting soil. Put some oxalis triangularis pots on the window where they keep growing. Other pots go where ever there is room in the house. :). I give a little water for the ones I am not growing actively over the winter when dry so that the bulbs would not dry up but don't know if necessary.

I'm not ready to undertake potentially destructive testing by letting these freeze. Maybe once I have spares I'll see how they winter over in the ground. Telos has just started selling oxalis again, so hopefully these will arrive within a week or so. Up til now my only oxalis was 'iron cross', and the one that really got me going is o.palmifrons (below), and the many obtusa's that kept me going. I just hope their beauty doesn't relate to difficulty of culture. I guess I'll find out! --Rr in CT

Garden, what color is your Oxalis? After flowers fade, remove entire stem. (not leaves) Oxalis lasts forever. If by chance leaves die back, don't toss the plant..let it rest. Once you see new growth, place in bright light and water. IMO, purple is the easiest to grow. My purple Oxalix was started with one bulb, (early 90's) is alive and well today..I've had a few greens that kicked the bucket. There are some beautiful Green Oxalis around, including a tree type. It's probably very root-bound. Divide the rhizomes and pot into a free draining mix. There may also be an issue with Fe (iron) uptake. Soil pH tends to rise as soils age. This can cause Fe to form insoluble compounds, making the Fe unavailable for uptake, even though it is present in the soil. Get some pH paper and add enough white vinegar to bring your water down to a pH of 5.5, and take note of how much vinegar it took. Add that amount of vinegar to your water each time you water and the leaves will green up again. If you don't want to bother with the pH paper, try an ounce (2 tbsp) in a gallon of water. Make sure you're flushing the salts from the soil regularly, too. Let the plant get dry to the point it looks 'wilty', then flood the soil with lots of water. Josh, I've been growing oxalis crassipes (pink flowers, gray-green foliage) around my roses for years. I use them to edge several beds, and I've never had them get out of control. If they start to creep too close to the roses (I have mulch directly under the roses), I just dig some for the next person who asks for a start. I also grow oxalis triangularis (lavender flowers, very dark purple/black foliage) which some people grow in pots. It does perfectly well here in the ground. I have it in only one bed where I have other bulbs planted that grow up through during the various seasons. This oxalis has never jumped the edging. It's far less vigorous than oxalis crassipes. Once upon a time I grew oxalis regnellii (white flowers, gray-green foliage). It was the least vigorous of the three. I'm not sure I even have any left. All of the ones I mentioned were about 5-7 inches tall and grew into a solid groundcover. I believe I bought my oxalis at a favorite nursery in Cedar Hill (that has since closed - they had lovely old roses), but I have also seen oxalis in many, many places in the Metroples - even the big box stores. Sometimes it is located with the shade plants so you might look there. The only drawback to oxalis crassipes is that it browns and disappears when the temps are in the 90s - if - the bed is in full sun. It stays vigorous in my partially shaded beds, and of course thrives with plenty of moisture. The oxalis triangularis is in a partially shaded bed so I don't know if it disappears in the very hot sun. This trait of disappearing doesn't bother me; usually I have enough other things growing that no one notices that the oxalis is not there. But everyone does notice when it is there. Hi Ladies - it's been awhile! I hope you are both doing well. I got an oxalis from the swap (maybe from you Flowergirl) and enjoyed it all summer long in the garden; it did great. I dug it up a few weeks ago but it did not seem to like it. It died right down to the point I had given up and was about to throw it out. But right then I took a closer look and saw a shoot poking up. It's still iffy but I have one good stem and 2 tiny shoots - cross your fingers for me! If I was in London I would get some more from you Flowergirl as they are just so dainty and pretty!

Hi Serendipity, I'm doing fine, thank you. Your oxalis is doing fine as well I see. :) They die down when digging up but start growing again on the window sill eventually. The ones I leave in other places start growing an odd shoot which is okay. But when the spring comes they all burst into life after taking them outside and starting to water them well. It was nice to hear from you. :)

Hi Flowergirl, I just wanted to thank you for your advice with the oxalis. My shoot above died and it's been a pot of dirt since probably December. But I held on to it remembering what you said and low and behold I have a healthy pot of them coming back!

Hi Serendipity, you are welcome. :) When you take it out after it's warm again, it will be full just like last year. Oxalis is a bulb and like all the other bulbs they just have a resting period in between. Glad you enjoy it! This plant was brought to our swap group by a person who hasn't been attending for last couple of years but she keeps giving through her plants. :)
