Dawn Redwood vs. Bald Cypress in Autumn

My Bald Cypress is shut down for the season..., has been for a few weeks now. Meanwhile, the DR is spring time green and lush. There has been no frost (lowest temp around 50 F so far. It has been rather dry until recently. Is this..., a.) normal, b.) related to temperature and day length or c.) drought related.

If you are not getting about 2"-3" of rainfall a month during summer it would not hurt to start watering your bald cypress weekly. Mine are suffering from 4 months of drought.

Here's a picture showing both of them with an M. s., 'Ogon' in my garden last year. I will try to get another picture this year from the same vantage point when they turn more color. They are pretty green now and barely showing fall color

Good to hear there has been some success with planting them in shallow water. I have planted some at the waterline and some a couple feet below the future waterline. lkz5ia - 99+ percent of my trees are planted out of water. I have planted about 8000 seedlings and counting the last 3 years as part of my reforestation project. I am simply trying to add features to make my pond more appealing to the eye - plus I'm guessing the fish will like the structure. I have planted the bald cypress / dawn redwoods in a corner of each pond. Am interested to see how they grow once the water comes up. Will let you know - hopefully we get some runoff this year. We've been dry as a bone for about 18 months now. Here is a link from erniew posted on gardenweb of the cypress trees just down I-70 from me. oh .. gotta beat me to it ... i am 5 8".... and have a 6 foot ladder .... that puts me safely to about 10 feet while being safe ... including at least one other person to hold the ladder ... i have an extension pole saw/pruner ... and though it may extend to great distance.. i find i cant hold it aloft and actuate the thing.. probably about 10 foot limit again ... unless you are part monkey .. or part squirrel.. or happen to have a bucket truck available... i just dont see how you will 'maintain' a tree at 15 feet ... ken

I have a grafted Shawnee Brave Bald Cypress approx 50' downhill from a few Black Walnuts & 25' from the dripline. It's in moist clay - the water is run-off from up by the Walnut trees. It's growing so slow, less than 8" per year, & the needle/leaves are very short compared to other specimens I've seen. It looks chlorotic, but pH is neutral - I'm considering composting it. It's just not right... I had a 2nd Shawnee Brave w/ same growth issues, 12' closer to the BW. One winter this BC suddenly died back to the graft after 2 or 3 yrs growing. It resprouted below the graft as common BC, beautiful green fast growing stems - 36" in 1 season - but alot of those stems died over the next winter, then it shot up new stems... Eventually I got rid of it - I didn't need a Bald Cypress 'shrub'. I assumed the appearance & issues were caused by poor roots due to clay, but when I dug up the 1st tree I was surprised how deep & strong the roots grew in just a few years. I still think the problem is the planting location or Shawnee Brave weaknesses, but maybe juglone can stunt Bald Cypress growth.

Non-dwarf (or dwarfed) versions of either become landmark trees over 60 ft. tall. So even where enough horizontal space is present nearby objects - such as houses - may eventually be made small-looking by the big tree being present nearby. Small-sized debris produced by cypress family conifers such as these can also be a bother in gutters and in pools, when these latter features are close enough to the trees to accumulate a significant amount of material.

I also have both plants in my garden. The bald cypress had a rough summer (hot and dry here outside Atlanta) and has already lost most of its leaves. The ones which remain, however, are green. My dawn redwood survived the summer completely unscathed; it remains fully leafed-out without any fall color, yet. But I typically don't see the colors change until the end of October/beginning of November.

Asian imports seem slower to turn for me in the fall including my metasequoia. By now all of mine except my Ogon are showing SOME fall color.

I have baldcypress, pondcypress and DR. At first, the DR turned latest, but over the yrs the cypresses have turned later and now they all seem roughly coordinated when they turn -- all turning right now and very similar colors.
