induction cooktop, flush vs overhang mount

Countertops installed Friday (Granite). I wasn't there and the fabricator installed my 30" Miele induction cooktop with an overhang mount. I was planning on a flush mount, but my wife actually likes the way it looks. I'm sure it would't be too difficult to change it if I want.

Any opinions on +/- besides aesthetic considerations? It seems to me that in a flush mount there is a risk of having a tiny gap that could be a debris collector and difficult to keep clean.

Yep. All crevices eventually will get gunk, even if it's just residue from the soapy water you clean with. Vertical crevices, obviously, get gunkier faster, and are more unsightly, than horizontal crevices. With a totally flat stone counter, the horizontal crevices of the overhang are much smaller than even the most perfect fit of the flush mount.

But that's absolutes. In reality, both are pretty easy to keep clean and there's no reason not to put it the way you like it. A pointy bamboo disposable skewer can help with crevice gunk.

I would want the flush mount. I would worry something very heavy on the uneven edge would crack the glass...I would also prefer the slick look.

Thanks, that's a very good point ... after just checking the installation manual it turns out that it also applies to the cooktop if it's top-mounted. I also just stumbled across another thread that indirectly addresses my question ... it appears that one potential worry is the skill of the stone fabricator, and another is crumbs getting in the crevice. Miele is very specific about their installation needs and those must be followed to the letter. Be SURE to go to the model number of the appliances you are getting, download those specification sheets, make copies and hand them to the contractor, cabinet people, plumber and electrician. They need them and I never depend on them getting the right ones. My kitchen is 12 now and I started with a different brand. Had to replace over time -- first the oven, then the fridge. Went with Miele. The Miele dw is 12 and has never had a repair. It looks like new and functions wonderfully. I'm completely devoted to my Miele oven though it's the older pre-steam model. I will say, it requires a learning curve to use it. When I bought it I made up my mind I would and it's paid off.

So, time to chime in here. I went with the Blue Star 36" induction cook top 2 years ago. Looks great, LOVED the knobs, worked fantastic... for about 18 months. I'll note that unlike their other products it only has a 1 year warranty. First, the two rightmost burners started indicating they were overheating when the central burner was in use (and the rightmost were not). I reset the system at the breaker per the manual and it rand great for three weeks with a hitch, then the central and right top burner cut out entirely. Three days later they came back, but wouldn't heat above level 7 (out of 10). I had (or so I thought) the good sense to get an extended warranty, but after getting a service guy out here the warranty company informs me it will cost more to fix than I paid in the first place, so they're going to cash me out. Blue Star may be good in other areas (no experience here), but based on my experience with this one, I don't think they have enough time making this product to reach their usual degree of reliability. Addendum: looks like Blue Star (when I bought it) had a narrower cut out (18") than anything currently on the market, including their own product. At least it looks like they're learning from past mistakes...

The only reason you would be concerned about installing stone on a floating floor is if the cabinets are installed on the floating floor. Which they should never be. The fridge, range, dishwasher all go over a floating floor. But not cabinets. The floating floor should be installed around the cabinets with enough space for expansion/contraction. Cabinets are installed directly over nailed or glued product. Engineered stone weighs about the same as granite so there is no significant difference in any issues caused by the weight of the product. It sounds as if may not have knowledgeable people assisting you in your install.

I too like the look of flush mount, but (and please correct me if I'm wrong) there isn't a standard size for the cooktops, so should you need to replace your cooktop in the future you will be more limited because of the cutout.

I think I've read too many bad reviews (not Miele, just appliances in general).

Famous last words.

And, ones that couldn't be farther from reality.

This technique is a big deal and why you don't see it everywhere. It is also not going to be able to be done with your tops installed in your kitchen - or at least not very well. They will have to be removed and this assumes that the the existing cutout is sized properly to allow for enough lip to support the top. And' I'd be surprised if there is enough now.
