Comments (11)fauguy - Yes I keep reading that the cheese & starch option isn't noticeably better and noticeably is noticeably you know? Frankly, what turned me off even more than the price difference was the less-intuitive control panel of the fully integrated model. On the Optima - which was my second choice but is becoming my first choice - you can see each of the 6 cycle options on top (they each have their own buttons or something easy like that) and that is mighty preferable to me. Also because my mom and other family members/friends may occasionally go to turn on the machine and get all flustered by having to use a menu. Another factor is that when I talked to the Miele people - just like you said - they seemed to think the La Perla was kinda sorta ridiculous. That's so funny! I love that; it's so refreshing. They also explained to me the Rinse & Hold option which I hadn't read closely enough before. I like that you can put messy dishes in and press that button but not have to fill the whole machine up (that it just essentially soaks them). That process will probably ensure that on the pots and pans setting, all will come out clean if they wouldn't have otherwise. What's funny is that if it weren't for the menu on the control panel, I would have been willing to spend the $500 extra - also cause I like the way the door opens on its own to help dishes dry more quickly (and for better racks). But I'm glad not to have to spend it, too. :) dcwesley - as I said above, I think the Optima is the one we'll go for. Thanks for sharing your experience w/ it. I wish you had a better experience w/ the racks but hopefully someday they'll improve them for all of us and we can upgrade the racks at that time (?). I'm having a hard time deciding which would be better to plumb to - hot or cold water. I guess cold water makes more sense when you have a larger family (5 in our case) who are likely to take more showers and likely to run out of hot water too often if a dishwasher's added to the mix (remember - we haven't had a dishwasher since 1995)! I don't like that it will take longer but then I wonder exactly how much longer it takes to get that cold water heated up enough, you know? And here's another good question: if I'll be using the Rinse & Hold option quite often, does that mean dishes will be rinsed in cold water each time? Or does it mean the machine has to heat up that water each and every time we hit the rinse & hold button (which would be often)? It seems it would be a bigger waste of electricity. Comments (10)I think I want a stainless Miele dishwasher with hidden controls, but I don't like any of their handle options. In my quest to decide on visible vs. hidden control dishwasher (see my earlier post), I discovered the option mentioned in this post: Order a Miele fully-integrated unfinished dishwasher along with the optional "blank" (no holes, no handle) stainless front panel, no-holes (Miele part number 21995337D). However, I've looked at the cartoon installation instructions referred to above, and I can't quite figure out how this works with a stainless panel. The instructions seem to show how it works with a wood panel, but I'm unclear on how my own handle would attach to a stainless panel. I realize you can drill through the stainless (well, I can't, but my installer can), but I'm not sure what a handle would "grab onto" in a stainless panel, because I'm not sure what the stainless panel looks like out of the box. If you order part number 21995337D, do you get 3/4-inch thick stainless steel? The install instructions say the panel has to be 3/4 inches thick, but if it were pure metal that would weigh 100 pounds! Or is it a thin sheet of stainless over some type of wood? My problem is that I can't figure out if I need some special type of handle with special dimensions, or if this stainless, no-holes, no-handle panel from Miele is engineered in some way to grab onto any handle that can be screwed in from behind. Comments (26)Your repair guy is all over the map. On one hand he says maybe temperature or low water, then goes on to say the Gel has a tendency to clog....which would have nothing to do with low water level or temperature. However, he has mentioned the things I, too, would focus on....except for the gel part. What you've just described here is most likely an obstructed drain line....which is pretty common. You got it partially cleaned out with your DWMagic and vinegar so it seems like your problem's solved. I suspect it isn't and will come back....it usually does. Suggest you take a minute and do this: Disconnect your drain line from its connection point under the sink. Get a good look in the drain line end and into the discharge connection tube. This will take minutes and will tell you a lot. Stick your finger in there and examine whatever clings to it. Whatever that is is the stuff that will be accumulating again and eventually causing the obstruction that's slowing your drain and leaving junk all over your dishes. After that, on your next load do check the water level in the machine after the fill is complete. Fill-solenoid problems are pretty common and easy/cheap to fix if that's a component of the problem. I'll bet its fine, but there's another easy check. Low water is another culprit that will, indeed, leave crud all over your dishes. I think that's probably OK because of your description of good results after your magic/vinegar cleanout. That's why I'm suspecting the drain line instead. From your description, I have a hard time accepting the "bad gel" theory. However, powder works fine, too so use what you want. Of course I'm sitting here at cyber-distance and haven't seen what you've seen so I need to back off a notch. Comments (48)Fragrance from the grapefruit tab remains in the tub. Haven't found any transfer to glassware whatsoever. Method also makes a no-fragrance tab. Interesting that you don't get horrible detergent smell from the glasses by using powder. I hate the powders -- can't stand the smell (though the gel is worse). Tabs are a huge improvement for me. Like it or not, the rinse aid does matter as these machines are designed for its use. (Germans seem to have a thing for surfactants). As someone said on one of the threads, if you want a Miele, and dry dishes, it's necessary to accept rinse aid. Fortunately, it's adjustable. You might have a conversation with tech support on this issue. Perhaps the newest machines are more flexible on this. Everyone's water is different. In your house in may be fine to add extra heat and use Cascade. With my soft water I wouldn't dare. However, at one point they programmed the final rinse to be hotter than normal to improve the drying. With a cold-water hook up, which I have, and the onboard heater, a hotter rinse might not affect the cycle time. Occasionally get filming -- iridescent looking streaks on a glass. So I find it useful to an empty cycle on sanitize to clean out any residual soap every few weeks....See Morepalomalou
