Bishop's Castle
Comments (21)This thread brings back memories. I was planning a vacation to take my Mom along the Hudson River and through the Catskill Mountains in September of that year. I still grow Bishop's Castle, and love it. It's about 3 feet tall, good repeat and wonderfully fragrant blooms. Comments (20)Maryl - So when you saw Midnight Castle and When Royals Dream almost together, which did you like best. I've always thought When Royals Dream looked like a fabulous purple too. When the heat index is 100, SC Francis Busby fades a bit. It is very bright in the "red bed." With scape blast and one of the Julie Newmar seedlings taking over the seedling bed and robbing the others of shade, I can't get accurate stats on Valentine Sweetheart. At this point, VS has better increase and reliable rebloom but a bud count of only 8-9. The sib has developed rebloom and has a bud count of 14. Since they do have differences - one with the gold edge and the other with the white, I might end up introducing both of them as some point. VS had one fabulous scape developing before the blast, and I thought it was going to develop the lateral branching. Because of the rain wave followed by the heat wave, I could not risk moving VS to the new evaluation bed I made. If I ever get than one in good soil and enough sunlight, we will see what she can do. Both are shorter than I would like - 24 inches tall....See MoreScary amounts of landscape fabric and gravel in Castle Rock
Comments (22)I "liked" ZachS's comment "having a vast plain of rock is not a viable solution any more than is Kentucky Blue" so much and if there were a double-like button, I'd click that too. His points about zeroscaping are more eloquent and scientific than mine. And SO true. Rock has consequences. It's hot and takes a lot of maintenance. That maintenance often includes harmful chemicals to keep those weeds at bay. I read a recent article about the problems they are having with some of the water-wise gardening in California. Because there is so much rock, there is no water for the trees. Homeowners are not watering lawn anymore which is where the trees were getting their water and they neglected to plan for that. So they are losing big shade trees everywhere. Everything has an impact on something else. I know that water is expensive and I'm definitely not advocating that anyone install a home golf course or baseball field, but there are so many other solutions. Like Skybird said, Amester has a beautiful grass-free front yard that probably uses a fifth of the water that lawn would and likely has few weeds and no chemicals. I'd love to see more of that! Comments (26)Thank you very much for sharing photographs from your visit. I agree with Rosylady that Sissinghurst is a great example of gardening to define a place/space. The yellow yarrow (Coronation Gold), for example, is highlighted and looks like it belongs in the surroundings. I also really appreciate seeing the California native bush anemone, Carpenteria Californica, used in this setting. Roses swaying in the breeze was cool to see as well. The Nuits de Young moss rose, James Mitchell centifolia rose, and Sissinghurst Castle namesake gallica rose, and President du Feze(?) rose were my favorites in this collection. Justin...See MoreLavender Lass
