Problem installing Grohe faucet cartridge.

I posted this on the Terry Love Plumbing Forum, w/o any luck. Can anyone here help me?

"We are trying to install a new cartridge in a Grohe Eurocube faucet. The illustrated instructions included with the part show a plug and a set screw to remove the handle. How can we remove that plastic white plug to get at the set screw? I tried using tweezers, but I don't want to wreck the plug so I can replace it after and not have it all scarred up. Help?

It took us almost an hour to get thru to their customer service (tech support) back in July when the faucet first began to leak. It is warranteed for life, so they shipped a replacement cartridge. That took 6 weeks, and they were unresponsive to our e-mails requesting when it would ship.

So, before I settle in my chair with my phone for another long wait, I simply thought I'd ask here to get a quick answer. I know I am not the first person to replace a cartridge and this should be easy, but....

Good god, people love to dump on someone and belittle their concerns, rather than contributing anything that might be useful. Read a bit about environmental toxins, and you might change your mind. Otherwise, put a sock in it. I am also concerned with reducing my exposure to environmental toxins. People live longer, yes, but they also are getting diseases linked to chemical exposure with more frequency as well. Also, there is NO SAFE LEVEL of lead, period. Lead is a neurotoxin, and particularly for people with growing brains (eg. children) this is an extremely valid and serious concern. Why do you think the government keeps lowering the allowable amount of lead? Have you read anything about the link between lead and lowered cognitive ability, or aggressive and antisocial behavior? You can keep burying your head in the sand, but those of us who care will not. And your patronizing condescension won't make an iota of difference. You can thank us later when you've been drinking from your faucets that have vastly less lead than they used to have (though I'm going for faucets that are 100% lead free).

If you have to ask, wait for the plumber. What you're doing isn't difficult but it is a pain and can be time-consuming. I love these faucets (when they're working right) and have had quite a few at various locations in the last 22 years. However, they are expensive and do require occasional maintenance.

I did contact Grohe about this, the head will probably drip and they just re-stated the spring installation for the head problem. Not helpful at all. I'm concerned about their lack of customer service enough that I'm going to return it.

Most Delta faucets are manufactured in the US with a smattering of chinese parts, their designer line Brizo is manufactured in the US with a smattering of European parts. Hansgrohe are manufactured in the US. More expensive Grohe faucets are manufactured in Germany. California Faucets are manufactured in California for the most part. Newport Brass is US made with a smattering of European parts. Note to self if you purchase it on the internet and have never heard of the brand its garbage. As for Kohler and Moen....go to any plumbing supply house and ask them what brands they sell more parts for and those are the two names they will say. In fact, Kohler gives out our phone number for people to call for repair parts because even Kohler can't purchase aftermarket parts and or the faucet is so old, they can't identify it.

While you can wait a while on the phone with Grohe their tech support and service has been excellent when I've needed them. I do however feel your pain on the wait although I've never had a delay on parts. In fact they usually arrive so fast I'm shocked in a very positive way.

Look at the bright side. When you get through you will be speaking to some one in the US, that understands and speaks English. That's getting to be about as rare as Hens Teeth.

They also understand their products so I'm confident they will be able to help.

I just Googled 'Grohe Eurocube Schematic' lots of hits. Would help if you had the model number. Tub faucet? Sink faucet?

I have the detailed illustrated schematic that came with the part. Here's a pic. That little plug has to come out before I can get at the 3mm set screw that will allow me to remove the faucet handle. It is flush with the chrome so it doesn't pry off. See photo in my original post. How would you proceed?

Just got an answer on the Terry Love Plumbing forum. It requires a pic. I used one side of some very pointed tweezers and out it came! Hooray.

Next time use a needle or a pair of needles and you will do less damage to the plug. Also: 1) remember that you can possibly turn the plug end-for-end when you reinsert it and may have a less damaged surface, 2) many plumbing fixtures have exposed set screws and they are innocuous, and 3) once the plug is out it should be easy to find white plastic rod of the correct diameter at a plastics store to cut short lengths from to make new plugs.

The plug is flexible, gray silicone about 1/8" thick. Flat on one side with a number (6 or 9) on the back. Using anything too thick would gouge it. Glad that is done.
