Basement ceiling options
Comments (8)Having fixed a few drywalled basement ceilings, I think drywall is a really, really bad idea. Inevitably a pipe springs a leak and the water never appears directly below the leak. Now you're hacking up the drywall trying to find it. Sometimes your needs change or you discover the space isn't quite works as planned and you want to reposition lights or run new wire/cable. Maybe you want to add a spigot outside or run a gas line to the new grill. Having access makes all of that a whole lot easier. While something like a suspended ceiling might not be as attractive some kind of ceiling that comes down easily in reusable pieces is a better plan overall. Frankly, most people don't spend that much time staring at the ceiling and the walk down the steps will tell your visitors they're in a basement....See MoreHeating options for Finished Basement
Comments (14)The idea of using a water heat to provide hot water for a hydronic system isn't new and basically involves adding a circulating pump and a thermostatically controlled valve. Because water heaters aren't designed for this purpose there are a few drawbacks. The water temperature is considerably lower than what would come out of a traditional boiler so the heat output of the baseboard (or wall unit) will be less. You could raise the temperature of the water heater but then you'd have to add a mixing valve to prevent anyone taking a shower from being scalded. At the beginning and end of each heating season you'll need to make adjustments to water temperature and the mixing valve. There's also the, somewhat unknown, question of capacity -- what happens to your basement heat when someone takes a shower or what happens in the shower when the basement heat kicks on? Assuming you have a forced hot air sytem now, adding a few vents to the basement will probably keep you comfortable and will likely be the cheapest solution. As mentioned you could do a direct vent fireplace or space heater. Electric baseboard tends to be the least expensive to install and the most expensive to use....See MoreBasement ceiling options
Comments (4)If painting the exposed framing/floor above, I would paint it all (flat) and eliminate any furring pieces that were used as nailers or trim. Paint the dark color down to bottom of joists with a clean horizontal line at all four walls. You will need to consider lighting, possibly track system. Drawbacks include (as indicated above) sound transmission, possible dust and no insulation for the floor above (more draft, less efficiency of heating system). The look is interesting, but there are a few practical drawbacks....See MoreBasement ceiling options
