question about bringing potted roses inside for winter
Comments (3)Yes, the polar vortex did a lot of roses in this year. So don't feel bad about losing yours. Sometimes things just happen. As for bringing them inside the house I do NOT recommend it. They will not be happy and you stand just as great a chance of losing them inside as you do outside in the garage. They won't get enough light and the humidity will not be right for them. They just fail to thrive inside. Put them in a protected spot in the garage, where they won't get blasted every time you open the door, up off the floor on blocks and water them some every month through the winter. It's still the best chance they have of making it. We can't predict the weather but hopefully it won't be as bad as last years....See MoreCan I bring my rose pot inside during the winter
Comments (1)It will survive if brought into an unheated garage or shed and kept away from a light source. It must be watered once in awhile but it will be dormant so it shouldn't be too wet. If you have a sunroom that stays cool and other plants thrive in during winter, it may be OK there. Roses are not indoor plants and the dry heated winter air inside a home can spell disaster for a rose bush. BTW, the number after crisx (crisx 8) should be your zone. At first look I wondered why you would want to bring a rose bush into the house in zone 8. You might consider changing it to crisx 4 to avoid confusion....See Morewintering herbs inside
Comments (8)Hey, I wish I'd known Lemon Balm was hardy! I think its too late to dig it out of the container and plant it now, so I'll pot it up and bring it in. I'll definately plant it out in the spring. Interesting about monarda being earl grey tea...I think this was talked about earlier this spring and I had forgot about it. My monarda came up but had so much winter kill that it just stayed stunted and kinda spread out. Same with my ginger mint so I didn't bother with mint jelly this year..my pork chops will miss it dearly :^( Thanks for the link, Pudge. Comments (3)-Basil - Annual. Harvest completely before frosts. Can take cuttings to start new plants indoors if you wish. -Cilantro - Annual. Harvest completely before killing frost. -Dill - Annual. Harvest completely before killing frost. -Lemon Balm - Perennial. Leave in the ground outside and it will do quite fine. -Rosemary - Bring in. -Tarragon - If it is real tarragon, I believe it is too tender for your zone. Use google to find out your hardiness zone as well as how hardy the plant is. -Oregano - Common oregano, Origanum vulgare, is quite hardy and will do fine in the ground for winter. But some other oreganos vary in hardiness. -Parsley - Biennial. For your needs, best to treat as an annual. Harvest completely before killing frost. -Sage - I don't know your zone, but I'd suspect this will be hardy for you but check it out. Mine survive well each winter outside in the ground. Good drainage is key for winter survival. -Thyme - Same as sage. -Blueberry bush - Same as sage except they don't need well-draining soil. FataMorgana...See Moretapla (mid-Michigan, USDA z5b-6a)
