I have 4 very recent (last 3 years) toilet purchases, from a Jaccuzzi- not worth discussing, to a Kohler (Ingenium, I think), AS and Toto. I think one must distinguish old from new, 5 gal flush from 1.6 from even less... The latter 3 are all excellent. Differences are notable from water spot size, to noise, to clean bowl. BUT I would still buy any of those 3 again, the AS cadet and Toto Promenade are the most similar in function, but the Toto is much more quiet, for certain. I find that MaP thing a little cumbersome to read... antss- yes, studies must show their data: study size, confounders, statistical significance of results, etc., ;-). Where is the p value?!?! And to note, in allll the yeeaars of using CR, which has been very helpful, one does need to understand that the rating is definitely cost related- best value for the dollar. I have purchased things that were top of the list, but definitely not the top product. I have learned. They don't always prioritize the same as I would, and it can be difficult to pick apart that subtlety.

I'm looking at online Consumer Reports via my local library's online resources, and the highest score is a 78 and it goes to St. Thomas by Icera Richmond ECO (6123.218, 6125.028). The American Standard Champion 4 Max 2586.128ST.0201 gets a 75 rating which is still considered "very good" overall and "excellent" in bowl cleaning. FWIW, I'm going with the Toto Drake II which scores a 72, so still "very good" overall and "excellent" in bowl cleaning. However, they rate the elongated Drake II and I'm getting the round. We have hard well water and a softener but don't get very much ring build up as long as the toilet is cleaned once a week with a normal toilet brush. Though after more than a decade now with the American Standard Cadet we have, I am noticing a faint ring that I've been unsuccessful in removing through various means (haven't tried muriatic acid yet). I'm actually hoping the finish on the Toto will help to prevent ring build up even though I'll have to use a more neutral cleaner on it to preserve the finish.

We have moved around quite a bit for work. We are getting ready to start building our 8th home and have lived in 3 others. Our last 2 homes, because of location norms and resale, we opted for higher end finishes. We installed Toto toilets and were very disappointed. They were noisy and, while they looked nice, we are putting in Kohler due to reliability, functionality and they stand behind their products. A few years ago we had a problem with a chrome sink faucet that appeared to be tarnishing. This was in one of the 3 homes we did not build ourselves. Kohler mailed us a replacement without any issues. They are not the top end but we plan to get as much Kohler brand in our retirement home as we can find that fit s our needs.

Take the lid from the toilet to your local American Standard showroom and ask the attendant to identify the color. There is no way to do that accurately on line -- too much variation in screen color depiction.
