Comments (6)I live in Alexandria, VA, just south of Washington DC. The current system is a 10 SEER Carrier HP (3 ton) and the air handler is located in the utility room in the basement. There is a return on each floor (one in the bottom of the air handler, one in middle of the middle floor (hallway) and one at the top of the stairwell outside the master bedroom. No dampers on the lines, attic insulation is good, but probably could be improved. No one has recommended window units. How do I find someone who will do a ductwork review? I contacted four reputable (well reviewed companies) and none mentioned this. I did reach out to someone this morning and got a reply that they were looking at my inquiry, but nothing in 12 hours. It seems people that do duct reviews/analysis are few and far between. If I went with a system on the 3rd floor, how would that work? I have approximately 730 sq feet of space, divided into a master on one side and two smaller bedrooms on the other (separated by a hallway with the split foyer stairwell in the middle. There is a bathroom in the master and in the hall by the other bedrooms....See MoreOpinions on Armstrong 3-ton a/c system?
Comments (4)Here are two sites that rate equipment: 1. http://www.hvac-for-beginners.com/air-conditioner-ratings.html 2. http://www.furnacecompare.com/ac_ratings.html I don't know who owns these sites, but it's interesting that Amana has better ratings in both of the aforementioned web sites than the brands recommended here like American Standard, Trane, Carrier, Bryant, Rheem, and Ruud. From FurnaceCompare.com as of 10/01/2012: Review Rank Based on Count, Brand, Review Count, Recommendation Rate, Quality Stars 1, Goodman, 594, 26%, ** 2, Trane, 342, 37%, *** 3, Lennox, 204, 21%, ** 4, Carrier, 143, 32%, ** 5, Rheem, 142, 35%, *** 6, Amana, 119, 43%, *** 6, York, 119, 18%, ** 8, Ruud, 94, 40%, *** From the HVAC For Beginners (just to match some of the brands in the above list): (Base System >= 13 SEER, Premium System >= 15 SEER, Ultimate System >= 20 SEER) AMANA------------ amana-hac.com -----4*-----5*-------NA---- This brand name is licensed and used by GOODMAN MANUFACTURING. The GSX13 units are a part of their DISTINCTIONS line and have just the basic features. The ASX13 is a basic unit but it has enhanced diagnostic controls and sound isolation features for quieter operation. The ASX16 series units are a premium unit and have Comfort Alert onboard diagnostics, an insulated compressor for sound control, a two stage condenser fan, and a scroll compressor for reliability. The compressor on the ASX16 units has a lifetime unit replacement guarantee. CARRIER-----residential.carrier.com--4*------2*---------3*--- The BASE SERIES (24ABB3) models have all of the basic features of a 13 seer unit as well as a very good warranty. The PERFORMANCE series (24ACB7) units feature a two stage scroll compressor with their "silencer system" for quiet operation but the warranty is not as good as many brands. The INFINITY series (24ANA1) units control humidity and ventilation systems as well as the ac unit for better indoor air quality. The also have an efficiency rating of up to 21 SEER. GOODMAN------------goodmanmfg.com----4*-------5*-------NA--- This brand offers 13 seer units in either R-22 or R-410a refrigerant but the units with R-22 are not recommended. The GSX13 units use R-410a and have a reliable scroll compressor. The DSX16 models have a 16 seer efficiency rating and are backed by a lifetime compressor warranty for peace of mind. The units feature a scroll compressor and a sound blanket for quieter operation. They have a two speed condenser fan as well as the two stage compressor for energy savings and they are backed by a very good warranty. LENNOX-------------lennox.com-------RHEEM--------------rheem.com---------4*--------1*------1*---- The 13AJN model units are basic 13 seer units with a good warranty. The PRESTIGE SERIES 16 seer units (RARL-JEZ) have "comfort control system" onboard diagnostics and two stage compressors for enhanced comfort and energy savings. The units can communicate with an advanced thermostat to maximize comfort and detect developing problems with the unit but the warranty is not as good as many brands in the premium category. TRANE--------------trane.com---------1*--------3*-------4* This brand is a part of INGERSOLL RAND. The XB14 models are the basic units and the standard warranty is not very good. The XL16i units are two stage units with a variable speed fan for enhanced comfort and energy savings and the warranty is pretty good. The Xl20i units communicate with the other parts of the hvac system to optimize performance. So, what does all of this mean? It means that there's a lot of confusing and conflicting information out there. Even the mid-level and high-level systems are not rated as good as I thought they would be rated....See Morebryant furnace/AC replcmt and contractors-please help!
Comments (5)squids I will offer my opinions.First Bryant is very solid equipment. It appears you have been quoted both the 80% eff and 95% Evolution furnaces. Great equipment. You do want the Evolution controller-no substitute please. For your area/climate, I see nothing wrong with the 80% eff furnaces(315AAV)-as long as they are paired with appropriate heat pump/evap coil. If you do not pair with heat pump, then go with 95% eff furnace(355CAV). As far as condenser line, stay with Preferrred 15 series, AC and HP "H" model. either way, you do want to take advantage of Fed Govt Tax Credit. 80% eff Evolution Furnace with qualifying HP 3107587 Active Systems PREFERRED 15 PURON HP BRYANT HEATING AND COOLING SYSTEMS 265ANH036-A CNPV*4217A** 315(A,J)AV048090 35000 12.50 15.00 35400 8.50 21400 3496618 Active Systems PREFERRED 16 PURON HP BRYANT HEATING AND COOLING SYSTEMS 266ANA036-A CNPV*4821A**+UI 315(A,J)AV048090 34600 12.60 15.50 37000 9.10 22200 95% Evolution Furnace with Preferred AC condenser 1390145 Active Systems PREFERRED 15 PURON AC BRYANT HEATING AND COOLING SYSTEMS 165ANA036-B CNPV*4821A** 355(A,C)AV042080 35400 12.90 15.00 3485032 Active Systems PREFERRED 17 PURON AC BRYANT HEATING AND COOLING SYSTEMS 167ANA036-A CNPV*4821A**+UI 355(A,C)AV060080 36800 13.00 16.50 IMO Good Luck!...See MoreReplacing AC & Furnace - down to two - need advice
Comments (31)Yes, sorry. My quote came to $10,600 for the Furnace, AC, Tankless HWH and an additional $3,500 for the attic air sealing / insulation. That totals around $14,000 - minus the $5,000 rebate means i'm around $9,000 OTD. Yes, I think my final question is if I want to move tankeless or go power-vent. I was told the tankless was a $1,000 upgrade so I would be at $8,000 OTD with the 50 gallon Bradford White power-vent. My main issue is we have a two-person soaking tub in our master which typically empties our current 75 gallon tank when we fill it. Upgrading to the Navein Tankless "A" series is an additional $275 if we want the reserve tank function which i've also seen conflicting reviews on....See Moretyson61
