How do you keep your style young as you age?
Comments (37)loribee, I finally got a chance to snap and upload some living room photos. Here is the after, which I just love: In the second photo, the Pier One table has the small lamp and Jerusalem Pottery on it. That, and the sofa pillows and rug are the only purchase I made. (sorry I didn't straighten up the throw pillows before taking the picture,) I am not going to "stick" something on the wall over the table. I am going to look over the next year or 2 and try to find something, maybe on vacation next year. Good news is the old boiler thermostat was there. Last year we put in new AC, and they moved all the controls upstairs. So I finally got to yank off and patch the wall where that was. It drove me crazy trying to hide it with something. I couldn't find any good pictures of the before. But before the TV was where the Pier One table is now. So the sofa was between the 2 french doors (and it was too long to look good there). And the leather club chairs and ottomon were on the front window wall. Very awkward to watch TV, because you were not facing it, and had to turn your head. It was hard to see the fireplace, and the room was lined up like a bowling alley. And it had a very large very burgundy rug that just sucked up the light from the north-facing room with 1 window. I honestly can't believe that this looks and feels and functions so much better just by making these small changes. And in case anyones is wondering, the cabinet holding the TV is a sideboard. We removed the lower drawer, drilled a hole through the back for cords, and put the cable box and internet through there....See MoreWhere do you put your throw pillows??
Comments (33)Well, even if revived by a spammer, it's still a useful topic. I find I'm incapable of making that "multiple designer pillows" look work. I've tried, but just can't pull it off. But we have multiple pillows because we actually use them. We read in bed and/or watch TV together, almost every night, in our MBR. When we decided to redo the MBR, one of the most expensive things we put in was a built-in storage headboard between the custom bookcases. After 25 yrs of stacking pillows on a bench I was tired of it. I wanted a slanted front where we could stack pillows 3-deep in comfort! This is the headboard unit right after it was installed (I replaced the crappy window blinds with a beautiful plantation shutter unit that I'm soooo happy with). It is sized for a CA King bed: The two storage compartments are identical, just reversed. The wider compartment fits a king-size pillow perfectly. Each will hold 2 fat pillows plus 1 smaller bedroll pillow. The smaller compartment is a great little cubbyhole for keeping little-used stuff accessible but out of sight:...See MoreGift ideas for first time homeowner - niece - 28 yrs old.
Comments (26)Softball, your suggestion gave me a laugh. Years ago a friend's daughter was getting married. They were young and starting from scratch. At the wedding shower I gave her a laundry basket with washing powder, bleach, dryer sheets, dish soap, dish clothes, tea towels, AND a "two-egg size" black cast iron frying pan. The pan even had a picture in it of bacon and two eggs. She not only loved it, but several of the guests said they wished they had thought of that. I wish I had thought of a plunger. the practical-minded Sue...See MoreTrick or treat age limit?
Comments (57)Now that I've answered a broad, sure anyone!, I see we're talking about the more general sense of what is going on. . The reality of this year is, I won't be handing anything out. Where I lived before I bought here? Three houses ago, it was fun and our baby was little. Two houses ago, almost no one came to our end of the block, but still fine fun! One house ago, it was our neighborhood block party. Everyone was out and everyone was kind and fun! New house: in 2015, we were at Contest of Champions and left a bowl with a note. In 2016, we were home and the trick or treaters were so rude, we closed up shop and went inside. It was the bused in crowd, not the nice neighbors I have. This year, I have a fence which will remain closed off with a bowl and a note to please take one. I'll be inside and not risk encountering the bused in group again. Oy were they rude as all get out. They were reaching in and grabbing stuff out of the bowl. Or just stood and glared at you. Not all of them, but some of them....See MoreLynnNM
