established crab grass -- questions
Comments (10)Crab grass seed blows in from adjacent yards and weed patches. I love a nicely edged side walk or driveway, but it provides an area for the seeds to sprout. I pull the larger plants before they go to seed. In the spring I put premergence in those areas that I know crab grass will sprout. I don't apply it where the grass is growing well. I had a nice blue grass lawn and used a bulb planter to move plugs to bare spots. It works better than reseeding. I now have a tall fescue lawn. It is a bunch grass and doesn't spread as fast. Reseeding in august helps fill in the bare spots....See MoreHow hard is it to dig out large established ornamental grasses?
Comments (6)Every grass you listed is a nice clumping variety. Not only CAN you plant in mixed perennial beds, but you SHOULD. That's where grasses can really compliment other plantings. The Cabaret could be a specimen grass, or treated as a backdrop. Provide at least half the mature height in potential girth. For example, a Cabaret should have about 4 to 5 ft available for base growth. Morning Light won't need quite as much, maybe 3 to 4 ft. Pennisetum Hameln is a dwarf clumping fountain grass that would not be difficult to divide or relocate if need be. Samne thing with the carex...very easy to divide, relocate, or transplant. As you suggested, the Miscanthus will be the larger varieties and should be planted based on mature size, not on the pot they're currently in. Don't plant too close to a foundation, provide enough room for them to fill out all the way around. All of this is based on treating the Miscanthus as specimen type plantings within the bed. I prefer to see the grasses in their full form, not cramped into spaces. Massed planting for effect would be the exception. NONE of these grasses mentioned, however, are going to create competitive issues within the perennial bed. Just as you plan the other plantings, plan and space grasses appropriately as well. Comments (3)it was not colder then normal ==>>> i am in Adrian MI .. 12 miles or so from the OH/MI border ... i am normally z5... i had a z4 winter... many.. many.. z5 plants were damaged ... i think you are wrong about the comment above... and i think... the grass is borderline z6 .... put the two together.. i suspect winter damage if not outright killing ... nothing is dormant all summer ... its probably dead ... start digging.. or leave it be to rot away .... ken...See Moredividing a well established peony
Comments (1)Next month, dig it up, wash off the dirt, and divide it with a big knife so that there are a few eyes or more on each piece. Replant with the eyes no more than 2" below the surface. You may very well get flowers next spring....See Morekarin_mt
