Does "warm" grey paint color with blue tone exist?
Comments (32)Okay...all the junk is out! Plan: clean up/mop dust, mortar chips, etc. and spend the evening with my paint samples...narrow down to three or four...paint sample boards, and pick a color. I would love to have time to see the sample boards in different light etc.; but my get-er-done DH scheduled plumbers on Monday and convinced the tile setters to partially grout the shower and come back to finish on Monday too....Grrrr! So...I plan to only paint behind the toilet and area and by bullnose edging. If I pick wrong.....I will not have to do redo the whole room. If I pick the wrong color, I am not worried about repainting near the bullnose; it is the toilet area that worries me. Anyone have a tip for painting behind a toilet that is 1/2 inch from the wall just in case. This is our attempt to correct a horrible inefficient layout...not thrilled about looking at the side of a toilet; but that compromise meant a towel closet in the bathroom (finally), a 60x60 angle shower, and room for a 77" double vanity while eliminating the 3 right angles in the second entrance from the master bath....See MoreSeeking the right gray wall paint to show off blue leather sectional.
Comments (7)I really like the white w/ gray trim in the photo above. I also tend to think that you need to go either darker, or use a tone that is not the same (blue& gray) as the floor and sofa - to prevent too much sameness in your major elements. To my eyes the floor and sofa just flow together - nice, but that is the sameness I mean. The exception would be if you have, or plan, some colorful wall art or accessories that would break up the expanse of blue/gray. That colorful painting seems to be an important element in the white wall/gray trim photo above. It also seems to my eyes that the floor and sofa (so pretty!) read cool, so you will have to have a care to not throw a random warm shade, as green grays can be (but not all are!) on the walls. Outside of that concern, I think that I personally would like a greenish tone in the mix. - it would certainly set off the sofa, if it is just the right shade....See MoreSomething a shade darker than BM Cotton Balls?
Comments (18)Can I ask how you are sampling these colors? You want to be looking at them in your space with the colors that are going to be next to them and looking at them without interference from other colors that will no longer be in the space and with the lighting that you will have in the space, both natural daylight and evening artificial light. You need to look at them in various areas of the room - some walls may get more sunlight than others, some may have gray shadows. You need to be looking at large samples. I look at colors every day and still like to view whites as 18x24 samples. Without experience I often recommend painting a 1/2 or full sheet of drywall to test your top contenders. Not too long ago we had a woman post her dilemma on Houzz. Everyone was trying to help her. Between us we explained LCH and lighting and our own experiences with whites. She had color matches done by different brands, bought dozens of samples, mixed her own samples and then after about 150 comments she posted a picture of her samples. She was looking at small samples next to each other instead of large samples tested independently. This was her response after trying my suggestion of painting 2 pieces of drywall and never viewing more than 2 colors at a time. @Jennifer Hogan your suggestion was brilliant. I wish I would have done the big pieces of drywall testers in the very beginning! in doing this, I found that I actually liked a few different shades that I believe I’d be happy with. Not comparing the colors I was considering to multiple other whites next to it or other testers on the wall to distract was a game changer....in addition, seeing it in a larger scale and bringing it into multiple different rooms w my samples also helped me appreciate the color even more, or throw it out until I ended up with 2 I liked. it’s a bit of a rainy day here today- so just to be sure, I’m going to go check them out again tomorrow w better sunlight & make the choice :). Thank you so much for this recommendation....See MoreWhat color paint to make grey/blue carpet look more blue?
Comments (12)Thanks everyone! The major piece of furniture is a medium/french blue sectional that I love, and it does bring out the blue in the rug, and a dark grey media cabinet. My dilemma was do I go with a greyish/blue paint, which was my first impulse, and suggested by many of you, or a warm white with more "orange" undertones since the orange is opposite blue on the color wheel and would therefore potentially enhance the blue in the rug. But I definitely don't want the walls to look orange. Can't do photos yet as it is early in the construction phase- just framed out. Thanks for the lighting concern, I will have at least one lamp down there, but we are investing in high end recessed so it should be pleasant, and not like a garage or workroom. I also understand that other design elements will make a big difference, but we are talking about 1100 sq ft of carpeting so it will be a dominant part of the design. Just looking at swatches (carpet swatch next to paint swatch) I like BM Beacon grey... but am concerned it will read baby blue once up on the walls......See Moresclubb
