It sounds very expensive. :-) The cost per unit is going to be much higher than the Chanel No. 5 perfume made from Ylang Ylang tree........

'You can dump tons of organic matter in the garden and wait for it to decompose into forms the plants can use, or you can use "chemical" fertilizer, which is already in a form the plants can use. Same food, it's just one sounds better to certain people than the other. Either way, the plant gets the same nutrients if you know what you are doing.' well, yes.....and no. We could, presumably, apply the same formula to ourselves, (and some people do) simply adding a few vitamin pills to make up for dietary deficiencies. However, soil is not some inert substance which just needs a boost now and then - it is a living, breathing, changing substrate. Organic matter affects the very structure of the soil - there is NO quick fix to supply a good humus filled environment. So, on one hand, I can state that I do not fertilise (as such) but I do leave a good layer of pulled up weeds underneath the plants and add copious quantities of compost mulch. Apart from a little extra nitrogen, the soil fertility is not really bumped up by doing this but, it allows for a free passage of fungal and bacterial help, mycchorhizal hyphae attach easily to the roots of plants, worms and beetles provide aeration....and so on. The question is either incredibly complicated, or blindingly simple and obvious, depending on your philosophy or belief in a natural equilibrium.

Has there been any herbicide use (either a round-up type or a weed and feed type) since last summer? If so you could try and see if there is a "third strike" (I would spray the plant with Wilt-Pruff as a precaution to try to prevent further spread of the mites. If there was no chance of herbicide damage, I suggest that you utilize the 2 strikes and your out "rule" i.e. remove it now.

Decorating trends are not like clothes fashion. It takes a longer time cycle, like 20 years. Stainless appliances were the "hot" thing many decades ago, then yes, they fell out of fashion. Everything does, after a long while - the eye simply gets tired. Especially these days, when everybody and their mothers can get photos of their remodeled kitchens up on the Web for millions to critique. I admire a nice piece of granite, or onyx, or even Cheng's fad-creating concrete countertops. Very pretty stuff. But just like rooster prints all over the kitchen, seeing it a few times is okay. You just don't want to see it in EVERY kitchen, that's all. Natural stone has the advantage of unpredictability. No single installation is going to look quite like someone else's install, even if it's the same stone. So the eye doesn't tire of it quite so fast...but it does happen. Specifically, although the first few dozen tumbled marble backsplashes I saw were (and are) nice, now it's hard to tell them apart. Everybody's got a special design arched over their cooktop/range, maybe a horizontal border, maybe not. Same old, same old. It's going to be the total package - counters, floors, cabinets, appliances - that make it possibly impressive, perhaps lasting design. None of us will know until we look at it in 20 years and say either "Blech!" or "Yeah, still looks good!" Still, this is a great time to be a consumer - the variety of what is available to us, within affordability, is absolutely amazing.

Thank you so much, Christopher, for posting this link to such an intriguing article. Finally, I have hope that a really good rose perfume may be produced before I ascend to the great rose garden in the sky. I've been searching for a such a perfume since the 1970s when the scent I wore was discontinued. Yes, hope springs eternal..damn the cost. Diane

What sounds a bit implausible to me is the stuff about the rose coming true from seed. If that is a requirement for the perfume industry (I wouldn't know why that would be the case) I very much doubt that such a rose can be created. Otherwise, why not?

I think many us us fragrance addicts would pay a hefty sum to grow one of those, no matter what it looked like. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for pointing this out. I hope something happens with perfume as has happened with wine and coffee -- namely a general rise in quality for the ordinary consumer. My personal feeling is that the quality of perfume as a whole went through a long decline when they got away from natural ingredients. Not that I have anything ideological against the use of chemistry in perfumery, in theory, but it is time to get back to the basics of what constitutes quality.

Part of the push toward synthetic ingredients was the increasing rarity of the natural versions. Quite a few species -- both animal and plant -- are being pushed toward extinction as a result. Off the top of my head I'm thinking of the various species of musk deer and civets, frankincense, and sandalwood.

Yeah, I was thinking of ambergris, but I know it's still collected whenever it's found washed ashore. The way the US laws are, however, I don't think it can be used or sold -- even if it was found on a beach.

I just looked on the web for the prices of these new rose perfumes and they are a little beyond my reach, to say the least. Well, at least I have my little selection of old roses, including some damasks and centifolia types :) and hopefully the senses to enjoy them for a few more years. AquaEyes, what you say is so true about the loss of species -- loss of habitat -- overpopulation of humans. It is so heartbreaking to think about.
