Schenectady, NY rose rosette virus news

"Rose rosette disease has made its way back into SchenectadyÃ¢ÂÂs Central Park Rose Garden, and for the first time it may have infected roses in Yaddo Gardens in Saratoga Springs as well.
The disease, present in the Central Park garden for the first time last season, infected several of the 4,000-plus bushes in 2012. This year, four have exhibited symptoms so far."

R. multiflora, what a famous NYT garden writer (Allen Lacey?) called "that vile weed", festoons trees and shrubs throughout the Hudson Valley. It was only a matter of time.

My David Austin "Heritage" has been hit by RRD. I noticed the odd cane a few weeks ago and cut it off. Another one cropped up and I removed it also. I have one good cane that is blooming currently. I hate to dig up the plant if I don't have to. I have other roses to the west (across the driveway) and Knockouts in the back of the house (which RRD won't discriminate against. Opinions please?

It looks to me suspiciously like someone on that thread is trying to sound as if they are "in the know" to impress people with their "contacts". In other words, the one claiming to "know someone" who "knows something" is talking out of their a** without a grain of veracity. I don't have a reddit account, but I'm sitting here stewing and contemplating joining just so I can post a few links to some credible, scientifically-tested information.

This is the part I find most interesting: ”A researcher at the University of Tennessee has had some luck killing the mites with commonly available chemical sprays or miticides. But they had to be used so often that it was not practical.” I believe it’s a reference to Dr. Mark Windham’s work. With certain miticides, he was RRD free for his trial period (the control sample and all other methods all caught RRD). He sprayed every two weeks, I do not find that ‘not practical’. I think more needs to be tested along this line. I’ve been using the same miticides he used, I’ve been free for over a year. Of course only time will tell and more research needs to be done.

Has there been any herbicide use (either a round-up type or a weed and feed type) since last summer? If so you could try and see if there is a "third strike" (I would spray the plant with Wilt-Pruff as a precaution to try to prevent further spread of the mites. If there was no chance of herbicide damage, I suggest that you utilize the 2 strikes and your out "rule" i.e. remove it now.
