what would you do with this family room?
Comments (10)What a beautiful room to have a problem with. I'm being facetious, this room has possibilities for so many different styles. You can really have a great time pulling it together. I love the room. So, dimensions are needed and another pic of the wall not shown. I actually counted the wood boards and came up with far less than expected for the width, even changing up what their actual width may be. Obviously my method didn't work to figure out the dimensions. Looking at the windows it is obvious a special lense was used for taking photos and has skewed what we are seeing. Is there an opening to a dining room or kitchen we are not seeing? Doors going outside? I love fireplaces and agree with others that the area is a great place for creating a conversation piece. It looks like the fireplace does have installation options for a TV above. But am not a fan of doing so and think the wall design itself is one to focus on. Creating another TV area. The right wall looks like it was meant for a gallery wall with lights under the bump outs. And not sure how much room there is between the heat outlets on the floor on both sides, which will dictate furniture placement. If this is the family room, do you have a living room too? What style do you like? Is there current furniture which will be used or can be used? Agree with the fan being replaced, but it may be a necessary element. You might want to wait 'til living there awhile to consider a need. There are many new styles available and would look at the possibilities for a better fit in the room. You are going to be busy moving, but don't forget us. Really want to see how the room evolves....See Morewhat would you do with this family room?
Comments (44)I'd keep the shelves as they balance the brick/wood wall. Just hang some art above the mantle below the 1st shelf but leave the shelves bare as an architectural feature. I'd paint the walls a mid-tone neutral color, maybe take a shade from the brick or wood - taupe (lighter than the wood) or grey. I wouldn't paint the trim if it's a decent quality and I don't think it limits your wall color choices much. Eventually I'd replace the wall to wall with hardwood but with small children it makes a good playing surface. Buy a good carpet cleaning machine or find, and use, a good commercial carpet cleaning company! I'd put blinds on the windows rather than fabric draperies for easier care and a simple look. The upper windows will need cordless motorized blinds and the lower ones could as well. I'd do all the kitchen windows with the same blinds. Bring in color and pattern in upholstery and accessories and provide the kids with toy chests that don't look like toy chests but are part of a more adult looking decor. Covered baskets on shelves work well also. Expecting kids to clean up after themselves is an important parental responsibility in teaching useful life skills....See MoreWould you give up your laundry room to add a half bath?
Comments (19)Thank you all again for the feedback. I'm really leaning towards sacrificing the laundry room and going with a powder room. The more I think about it and think about the way I do laundry, I believe the ROI (for me) on a separate powder room would be greater. I'm attaching a drawing, but I there really isn't much to work with. The area outlined it red is initially going to be a family room, but in a couple of years it will convert to an in-law-suite, so we want/need to keep that area separate the way it is (so ignore the bathroom there, that's part of the suite). The room labeled with the red L and blue B is the current laundry room, proposed change to powder room/mudroom. The alcove with the blue L is where I am thinking of moving the laundry, and the red X in the area to the far right is the location of the main floor bathroom in the existing house. And yes, we have walls, I just didn't draw them out! :-)...See MoreAdd “half moon” windows in the family room?
Comments (15)The round top windows aren't the curremt trend as alluded to above. Personally I think they will come back into style at some point as items that add "richness" generally do, but for now, most folks are getting rid of them as opposed to adding them. More importantly, I also agree with the sentiments that adding a transom (whether round, square, or whatever shape) won't make a huge difference in there as you already have a lot of glass on that wall. Reframing those openings is most likely possible, but would be cost prohibitive IMO for the small difference. Perhaps there are other walls of the room that windows could be added and make a greater difference, otherwise some of the advice given on the furnishings, carpet, etc would help as well...See Moretibbrix
