anyone else planted seed in the garden yet?
Comments (20)Exciting news! I just found out my 9 year old grandson will be in a new Warner Brother's movie! The movie is called, "Unnacompanied Minors", that will be released soon. It's a Comedy/Drama. They are filming part of it in Salt Lake City and vacinity. I think the airport scenes (and maybe a few others were filmed in Chicago at O'Hare, but the rest will be filmed in Utah. Plot Outline: A group of kids bond while snowed in at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport the day after Christmas, and ultimately create a makeshift holiday for themselves. As it is still in production, the data is subject to change. Unaccompanied Minors Starts Production Source: Warner Bros. Pictures March 16, 2006 Production is underway on the comedy Unaccompanied Minors, directed by Paul Feig (Freaks and Geeks) and starring Lewis Black (The Daily Show with Jon Stewart), Wilmer Valderrama (That 70's Show), Tyler James Williams (Everybody Hates Chris) and Dyllan Christopher (Seabiscuit) for Warner Bros. Pictures in association with Village Roadshow Pictures. The announcement was made today by Jeff Robinov, President of Production, Warner Bros. Pictures. It's Christmas Eve and five kids have just been snowed in at the airport -- and there isn't a parent in sight. Unaccompanied Minors follows awkward Spencer (Dyllan Christopher), rich-girl Grace (Gina Mantegna), tomboy Donna (Quinn Shephard), geeky Charlie (Tyler James Williams) and bashful Beef (Brett Kelly) as they try to outwit a disgruntled airport official (Lewis Black) and reunite with their families. Using "borrowed" golf-carts, a canoe on a snow hill and the help of a reluctant flight attendant (Wilmer Valderrama), these kids are about to prove the holidays aren't about where you are, but who you're with. The comedy will also feature Rob Corddry (The Daily Show with Jon Stewart) as Spencer's dad, as well as cameos by Donny Osmond (Donny & Marie), Al Roker (Today), Teri Garr (Friends), Jessica Walter (Arrested Development), Tony Hale (Arrested Development), Rob Riggle (Saturday Night Live), BJ Novak (The Office), David Koechner (Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy), Dave Gruber Allen (The Naked Trucker) and comedian Nick Thune. Unaccompanied Minors is produced by Lauren Shuler Donner (the "X-Men" franchise) and Michael Aguilar (Constantine) from a screenplay by Paul Feig and Kate Kondell (First Daughter) and Mya Stark & Jacob Meszaros. The executive producers are Ira Glass, Julie Snyder, Carrie Morrow (Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang), Michael Lambert and Bruce Berman (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory). The director of photography is Chris Baffa (Nip/Tuck, Running With Scissors); the production designer is Aaron Osborne (Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang) and the editor is George Folsey Jr. (The Pink Panther, Animal House). Unaccompanied Minors will be released by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, and in select territories by Village Roadshow Pictures. I'll let ya'll know more as I hear....See MoreDoes anyone else have Monkey Puzzle Trees
Comments (124)The most recently posted Long Island street view is from 2012! No proof they are still there after the 2 polar vortex winters. And the other recent winter that was very cold in New England but not as much down here. (2016 IIRC: well below 0F on Martha's Vineyard. Have no idea how LI fared) They often look out of place in typical residential settings but I think those twin Seattle trees suit the house and are well taken care of so I give them a pass! Good catch GG. I am actually wondering if the NW DC, Bethesda, and Baltimore trees survived this horrid summer...by far the most humid I can remember. We barely had any comfortable dewpoints throughout September, not until the last few days. USUALLY cold fronts start pushing in some crisp weather by the 2nd week of Sept. It was a constant steambath since May. And yes it is humid compared to the PNW, but constant dewpoints 70F or above are not normal at least up here. There's a reason you see at least a few old ironclad rhodies in the DC/Baltimore area, but none in the deep south. And other than the late June/early July drought/heatwave - just long enough to be a nuisance - incredible rainy spells, one after another. I'm lucky to have only lost a couple important rhodies to root rot. OTOH it was nice to not worry about watering the 6 or so new planted camellias in my garden. They are so thirsty in the first year!...See MoreAnyone else here worried about early bud break due to extreme temps?
Comments (25)Alana, I'm colder than your zone so some of my experience might not apply, but once the roses (and bulbs) start growing, there's nothing I can do to convince them to stop. They might get a bit frost nipped here and there, but unless you get weather returning to the 20's for several days in a row (and that's all day, not just a brief tip in the night), you should be fine. Apparently roses when they first start growing in spring have nature's equivalent of "antifreeze" in their canes and they're more insulated against cold snaps than they are later in the season. Roses like the rest of the garden are reading a multitude of factors that you may not be aware of (e.g. day length, soil temperature, moisture), and they usually know what they're doing or can recover from it if not. As for pruning, I prune off obviously dead wood as soon as the crocus and such come up, which is before the official forsythia blooming start to pruning season. Dead wood is dead, and the rose doesn't know you've cut it until you get into live cane. If you're worried that it's too early to prune, leave an inch or so of probably dead wood on the tips, and it'll just be a haircut to the rose, not a stimulus to start growing more cane. Once you can tell that the rose has indeed given up on that cane, and you feel better about stimulating growth, you can do a second round of pruning to get rid of those stubs. In my zone, we always have to do 2 or 3 rounds of pruning to get rid of cane that was only temporarily alive in the spring, so this isn't unusual for us. Bottom line for me is I prune off dead wood as soon as I feel like being out in the garden, and then do a more detailed prune once the leaves are definitely emerging. I figure if it has leaves it's going to be subject to weather variations with or without my pruning, and I want to get it done before planting season starts. Comments (37)Bob, I'm originally from the lowcountry in SC and get back there regularly. They've got citrus greening (and quarantine) along the coastline. I think where I'm at just outside Washington DC gets almost as bad with mosquito swarms, heat, and humidity. The plus side of being in Virginia is there is a 20% chance of having 4 seasons (eg. seeing snow) which I love and I have the Shenandoah mountains an hours drive which is pretty nice. I'm definitely looking at getting away from the urban area though....See Morecarolb_w_fl_coastal_9b
