Found this larva in my apple tree trunk - could it be the problem?

So I posted before about some problems with my apple tree trunk. Looked like something was chewing on it, maybe from the inside.

To see if it was squirrels chewing on the bark, I covered the affected area with mud and didn't disturb it for a week. No sign of the dirt being disturbed, so it must be something making a home in the trunk. I uncovered it today and pulled out this fat little grub:

Here it is with my keys next to it for scale:

Anyone know what it is and if it might be my problem-causer?
