It works like this.

a) if you want to receive messages, you have to enable it in your profile - go to "Your Houzz" in the top right.

b) To send someone a message, you have to go to THEIR profile and send them a message.

It's about as obscure as I could imagine it could be. It's like sending a letter by going to the person's home and posting it through the letterbox. It works, but sort of misses the point.

Having clicked all the right buttons now, my letterbox is open for business. Rosefolly, If you message me, houzz will email me and tell me that I have a message in my letterbox.

I like martin z's analogy, it does seem like going to someone's home and puttIng a note in a letter tray. Then a butler, upon noticing a note in the letter tray, rings a bell. Upon hearing the bell, the recipient retrieves the note from the letter tray. None of this can happen unless the person's home has set up a letter tray and agreed that they would like to get a note put into said letter tray. Very proper.

Thanks, this is exactly what I wanted. I am set up myself and have received messages, but have not yet sent any.

I think I fixed mine - went to profile and advanced setting and clicked "receive messages from anyone". I had no idea there were so many options for things!
