the Forgotten Cookie

A young assistant received a care package from an Aunt in Illinois. She shared some cookies. I was intrigued by the simplicity....a a quite nice light summer/fall sweet. A light meringue with chocolate chips, with that nice crisp exterior and a semi soft interior.

Looked it up and some recipes have nuts. I don't usually buy chocolate chips but i could pound up a dark chocolate bar. Thinking toasted pecans, (i always have pecans from my SIL's trees).

Not having made any cookie in years, would the meringue be similar if i cut the sugar in half? Still set the same? Not about calories...just cutting the overly sweet.

Is this a common cookie? Just intrigued by its origins and what else is used besides chocolate chips...

I don't want to go shopping. I have some salt cured ginger and licorice....(not trying to turn a cookie into savory, lol.)
