Lucky New Jersians and PA's getting some snow!
Comments (24)We have at least 2 feet of snow here - another snowfront just passed - the 3 in 4 days and closed the roads for some hours. This is real winter and white Christmas as in postcards. Last week night temps were down to -3F and hoarfrost and powdersnow glistened like diamonds in the sun and lights. But it does present challenges to traffic and delievery of mail. No electric problems here - since all the major powerlines are underground - unlike the power lines that clutter up the American landscape and makes power outtages common during storms and icestorms. There is nothing in the world as quiet and tranquil as snow. But as usual the beauty of real winter do not last long here and we go back to grey and cold and the snow will probably melt soon and we will see the constant freeze-thaw cycles and with no snowcover - this is what really cause winter damage here to roses. It really has been 5 years since we last saw any real winter here ... besides a fierce snowstorm in 2007 - better take some pics to remember what snow looks like. Most of Europe has gotten snow - more and earlier than usual. In some of the more poor European countries like Poland - they find 20-30 homeless people every day frozen to death - while we are sitting safe and warm in the comfort of our homes....See MoreLooks like Jay may be getting some rain/hail
Comments (8)Scott I received 6 inches of hail and 2 tenths of rain. The pepper plants I was hardening off that were against the north side of my house look fine. Most of the plants I had in my lean to the wind took some of the panels out of look ok. A few of the plants in the cold frames that were against the very west sides look ok. And the 3 plants in the garden that I hadn't removed the buckets and put the cages up look fine. The other 6 plants in the garden and 4 of them had maters on them and the remaining plants in the frames (250 plants plus) are basically wiped out. A few may rebound but not sure most will in time to amount to much. Had several real nice plants. My sweet corn is nubbins. Stripped the garlic and the onion tops are beat down to about 2-3 inches tall. The ground is covered with what it beat off. Will watch things for a few days. Might try to find some big plants to put out. I had planned to cut down and wasn't succeeding. Think this may do it. I'm thinking 20-30 plants now unless some show rapid improvement. Sure wish I hadn't removed the buckets from around those that I did. I looked at the weather this morning and they said the severe storms would be east of us and so did the NWS forecaster on the radio from Amarillo. Wish we had received more rain and less hail. Comments (16)Magpie...my mother used to use Lemon Juice for those yellow stains... a 'Tip from Heloise' ! I also found some other tips that might be helpful ; Homemade Ways to Eliminate Yellow Stains From Clothing There are probably several products laying around your home that can be used for removing yellow stains from clothing. Homemade products are often as effective as store bought products, however, since homemade products are less controlled it is also easier to cause permanent damage to the clothing. Be sure to test any homemade product on an inconspicuous area before applying directly to the yellow stain. Mixture of Baking Soda, Peroxide, and Water A mixture of baking soda, peroxide, and water applied directly to the yellow stain will remove it. Mix equal parts of baking soda, peroxide, and water in a small container. Apply the mixture to the stain and use a bristle brush to rub the mixture in to the fabric. Allow it to sit for thirty minutes to an hour depending on the severity of the stain and wash as normal. Denture Tablets Denture tablets can brighten yellow stains on light or dark clothing. Dissolve two to four denture tablets in a bucket of water. Set the stained clothing inside the water for eight to twelve hours. Remove the clothing and wash as normal. White Vinegar and Salt Mix a half a cup of white vinegar with half a cup of salt in a bucket of water. Place the clothing inside the mixture and stir for at least thirty minutes. Remove the clothing and wash as normal. Toothpaste Toothpaste can be applied directly to a yellow stain to brighten it. Rub the toothpaste over the entire stained area with a bristle brush until the stain is lifted. Once the stain is removed, wash the clothing to remove the toothpaste. Lemon Juice Lemon juice brightens yellow stains on white and light colored clothing. Apply pure lemon juice to the entire stained area and let the clothing sit in the sun for an entire day. As soon as you bring the clothing inside, wash as normal by hand or in a washing machine to remove the lemon juice Good luck... jane...See MoreI think I might like Caesarstone?
Comments (43)Hi all. Celine~ Thank you so much for the info. Things really come full circle on the Kitchen Forum! I would love to see pics of Cemento/Concrete and will email you. Appreciate it. As for the questions about why I'm not using soapstone and marble again~ I have loved the warmth of wood topped islands I've seen, especially walnut. I knew going into this remodel that I wanted a walnut island top. My calacatta marble was so gorgeous and felt great. However, it has doubled in price and to be totally honest, I'm not sure if I want to deal with the etching this time around. It didn't even bother me in the last kitchen-but I'm thinking of my babies growing into children and being busy and active in the kitchen and I just don't want to have to think about the counters. Also, we're planning 3 windows over the sink & I'm afraid the light might shine directly on the inevitable etching around the sink should I use marble. I would never advise against it. I just don't know if I want to sign up for the patina for the next few decades.... Soapstone is awesome. I just want a softer grey color and I wasn't too successful at the unoiled approach. Mine looked to me like soapstone that needed to be oiled. I am just drawn to the even, smooth surface and quiet grey of the CStone in concrete. For now. Who knows? Maybe I just want to try out some different things that I didn't use the first go round. I just better get it right because barring anything crazy, this is our forever home. Thanks all for your input. I'm open to any other thoughts. Katie...See Morenowyousedum
