Transitioning a miniature hosta from ground to a pot?

I have never grown any in a pot. I have a slow grower,
Peanut, that has done little since planted in the ground in 2013. It is also
slug or bug candy, and since it is so small, the ratio of eaten to intact leaf
area is not good.

I would like that
space for something nicer. But I would like to give Peanut a fighting chance,
and future less plagued by pests in a
pot.

If I dig it up and plant in a pot, how do I store the pot
over winter?

Use potting soil vs. dirt from the garden or bagged topsoil?

And,
what kind of pots do hostas prefer? Clay or plastic?

Thanks!
