Nervous about the heat :/
Comments (13)Leslie, I went through a period in the early to mid-2000s when I didn't bother with cool-season crops much either, except I kept planting onions....and it kept getting too hot too early and they kept bolting. I am about to go back to that---planting cool-season crops in early fall for winter production under low tunnels, and only planting onions in spring. Well, maybe some sugar snaps, but I will try growing them in the greenhouse in the winter. If they do well that way, I probably won't mess with them in the spring. If I lived where you live, I don't think I'd invest a lot of time and space in cool-season crops either. 102 sounds bad enough, and I hope y'all don't go 7 degrees higher. And, I agree with you that once it is 100 degrees, it doesn't seem like it matters what the temperature is because it all is just too hot. Chandra, Sugar snap peas are my favorite cool-season crop too and mine are blooming beautifully and producing well and I am going to be extremely disappointed if they start burning up in this heat. Carol, When we chose our garden site, I worried the woods would encroach from the north and west, but it was 1999 and that seemed far out into the future. Every year now, the shade closes in on the west end, and I like it there. I plant peppers and tomatoes at that end so they get some afternoon shade from the big pecan tree there. It is a nice, dappled shade. On the north side, though, the entire woods is creeping closer and closer and closer and starting to shade it too much. Tim cut back a lot of low-hanging limbs on the north side of the garden and really opened up that area to more sunlight yesterday, but what we really need to do is to clear everything within 40 or 50 feet of the garden on the north side because it produces a heavy, dense shade. I've been transplanting tomato, pepper and herb plants into molasses tubs today, but despite the heat it is not too bad. I am in and out of the potting shed and greenhouse constantly so I get some shade for a minute or two and the wind is even stronger than yesterday so that makes me feel cooler, although it undoubtedly is harder on the plants. It is only 84.7 degrees here now, so I think it may stay a touch cooler than yesterday, which would be good. Dawn...See Morenervous..about different color shingle than siding
Comments (3)At first I hated the color of our roof. It was a color our builder suggested, as did the supply company. It seemed to me to really stand out compared to the siding. But after they got the stone put up, and the stained concrete in the front done, it looks just fine. Try to step back and not just concentrate on one thing. When I was lamenting our roof color, I drove around our neighborhood and looked at other roofs, and was amazed I had never noticed the colors before. Some were green, some blue, some brown, some black, some red....See MoreNervous about Blue Cabinet color
Comments (10)Peggy, Don't be nervous it all sounds wonderful. Just look at this cover! And as for Marble if you love it get. People have a misconception about marble. Marble is as easy to clean as granites. And in some ways it is easier to repair than a Quartz. Children grow up quickly, and children can be taught not to use permanent sharpies on the island. Does Marble stain? Sure but 98% of the stains can be removed with bleach. YES good ole fashioned Bleach. Or peroxide. But not togehter please. Does Marble Etch? You bet but if once every 6-8 years you have it rehoned or polished it will look fantastic. Is marble hard to care for? Marble has been around for 1000s of years. Marble is as easy to care for as most granite or quartz. Some Old GW posts that talk about Marble. Honed marble countertops 3 years later? Photos? Comments (4)latimore, I think you should relax about mixing whites and creams. When we built our house I sat up in bed one night as I suddenly realized that after months of planning and decisions I was going to have a fairly bright ceiling white in my kitchen, vanilla bean trim and a much creamier white on my cabinets. I thought what was I thinking???? I had chosen each white with no real regard for the other. The kind people on the kitchen forum here told me it would be fine and they were so right. And I think even with your white tile, all the textures will differ and it will blend beautifully. I've learned to appreciate mixing whites now. I love bridal bouquets with a mix of white and cream roses, etc. I'll be curious what others say but my vote is to not stress over the whites....See MoreSuzi AKA DesertDance So CA Zone 9b
