You probably need the strength that the metal door knob affords. Maybe take your case to the HOA and ask for an exception or use a potholder as Moni suggested?

Find a small piece of rather thick cloth, sew it into a small tube and slip it over the handle if it's a lever. The residual toot (dang keyboards - that was supposed to be "Foot") of an aged sock should fit over a round handle quite nicely.

Is it knob style handle or a lever? They sell "door mitts" for hot lever handles on Amazon.

What about one of those child guard plastic handle covers? If the handle is round...you could slip it right over the handle. It spins uselessly when a child tries to open a door...but for an adult...all it takes is a tight grip of the plastic cover and the handle will turn. Of course...it's been eons since I've had a need for such a gadget but I do remember still seeing them around in our local hardware stores and even at one of the local markets that has a large youth section. I doubt whether your HOA would even notice the addition...and if they do...you can always give it a coat of exterior type paint to match the door handle.

What kind of handle is it? There's different colors of pipe insulation that would work too and it would form fit around the shape of the door handle. They come in different thicknesses and would be weather resistant. Any kind of a cover, even if you just had a little mini-drape of some sort hanging over it would help. You could glue something onto it (or tape it to try it out), anything dense that wouldn't absorb water, even part of a "pool noodle" would probably work and not be visually offensive if you picked the right color.

Maybe it would help to paint it a different color, white or something reflective. White should go with any color. Is it a dark color handle now?

Do you knit or crochet? Or know someone who does? Even a heavy cloth with some Velcro on the back would hold it on. Should be some kind of a simple and cheap solution available.

We visited my husband's aunt in Texas a couple summers ago. Everyone on Facebook was asking me if it was hot in Austin and I posted this pic of Aunt Bea's front door. She lives in a community with a strict HOA. This is temporary and works well for her.

I'd wrap some fabric around it, for a temporary fix. It'll still be hot, but it won't scorch any hands.

Oh my gosh I should have posted this sooner. You have come up with some great ideas. I will check with my neighbor who lives across the courtyard from me and see if they have the problem. I don't think anyone else faces the same direction and if they do they are a different model and have cover over their front door. The door has a regular knob but the storm door has a lever. I know I'll find something using these great suggestions. Have to go now----Im at the beach and it is calling my name.

Our house faces the direct western sun....pretty hot in Northern Alabama. Our steel door would radiate heat, the handle untouchable, and the whole front of the house so hot all summer.

We don't live under HOA rules, so the tree we planted in just the right spot a few years ago now fully takes care of the problem.

Even a piece of masking tape wrapped around the metal would help a lot. I like the photo of a potholder hung on the lock.

a pool noodle cut to fit around the handle may work. I took a look on google an it seems many people have this problem but no solutions were mentioned. I was thinking of some kind of spray coating, or a "cool deck" type paint.

We use koozies on our door knobs. Just fold over the excess material a couple times and secure with a hair tie.

I never saw the post just went by the comments. Often if you bring up a post from years ago and link to a product it can be questioned as spam.
