She looks clean, no dead leaves underneath and no visible bugs. There are some tiny babies growing which made my morning :). I cleaned everything up including new soil as I don't know what was there before. I will watch the watering. If there is anything else I should do please feel free to let me know.

Hey, that's a nice one, and based on the size and color, probably Echeveria imbricata. Is it in full sun? It just looks slightly dry. I hope you didn't water right after repotting. Slight breaks in the roots or stem from unpotting need a few days in air to callous to prevent fungal infection. Then plant in dry soil, and wait another couple of days before watering.

Thanks for the compliment, it is a nice one. Should I let it sit out of the soil to callous, or will it be OK planted with no water for a couple days?

I'd probably plant and wait a week before watering, but callousing for a couple of days never hurt an Echeveria. Bright shade no direct sun if possible while it waits for moisture. Is it potted, or in the ground?

In a pot, sun until 1:00. I'll move it to a shadier spot.

Hi I just got this Echeveria Blue Prince about 1-2 weeks ago along with several others. In the last day or so, I noticed it’s closed up. All my other Echeveria are fine although you can see in this picture, the little sempervivum is croaking. Anyway any ideas why it’s doing this? Seems perfectly healthy otherwise. Only watered after first planting in this pot. I got this from Etsy and it was bare root. Planted in my usual Dr. Earth Cactus and Succulent soil. As with most of my other succs, it gets morning East light and just a tad south sun which soon gets blocked by trees and 2 story house. I’m in zone 10. Sorry pic uploaded sideways.

It seems to be quite dark, and that indicates lots of sunlight. Most photos I have seen show much more bluish plant. Rosettes also close up - they splay wide if light is insufficient. Color also gets very light in those conditions. That doesn't mean it is in too much sunlight overall (I do not have any idea what is sunlight like in your zone); it may have been kept bit dark before and then it travelled to you in a package. It is always good idea to acclimatize plants, unless previous growing conditions are well known. They could also close if they are thirsty too. If that is the case, leaves start shrivell too. That is what I would think...

Sempervivums sometimes do not like much heat, and very often, ppl in z10 grow them in dappled shade. They are alpine plants, and overwinter under snow in my z5. It isn't supposed to 'croak' up unless rosette bloomed, because they are monocarpic plants. Did it grow any chicks? What are temps like where you are?

Thanks for all the info. Im in Southern California in Huntington Beach. Temps in 80s most recently. I’ve move the plant to a different part of my yard where it’ll still get morning East sun and minimal dappled south light. I know the plant doesn’t need watering as it felt damp enough when I insert finger plus I do also have a moisture meter. I think I’m going to look back at pic I took of this Echeveria when I first got it to compare color too. the tiny Irish Mist I think it is called, sempervivum was kinda already weak seeming when I got it along with this echeveria along with 18 other succs! This semp and this echeveria are the only ones having issue. I probably should not have watered it I think as the semps do not like much if any water at this time of year I believe I read. Anyway I will take a look at what the Blue Prince looked like when I got it to see if it was lighter than now and I will hope a bit less light may solve the not open problem. Also I should state that the seller on Etsy I ordered 20 succs from seemed to have a couple wrongly named items and also sent two that were wrong ones so I got two free but it’s been a bit confusing trying to match each one to what their shops site shows and or what google shows. Throw in how different they can look under different light conditions etc and it’s more confusing! Again thanks for taking the time to write such a detailed answer.

Oh jeez. Not Semp but Aeonium Emerald Ice. I’m buying so many succs right now. Trying to learn the names of so many in a short time frame is a lot for my old brains.

I was looking at the pics you posted now, and didn't see semp...now I see Aeonium, that was not easily recognized in op. Those plants are summer dormant, and shouldn't be in strong sun and lots of water. But summer is coming to end, and they should start looking much better.

Maybe you should sort out plants you have right now, learn about each of them before buying more - none of my business, just a friendly comment. It isn't so crucial to know the name of exact sp, cv or hybrid, as long as you know what is the genera to begin with. Sometimes, it is more difficult to maintain plants in community dish, since they could have some different needs - as is the case with aeoniums. Most succulents needs are the 'same': good drainage (potting mix and the container with drainage hole); lots of light-sunlight; good air circulation. But there are some that grow better in less sunlight, and others that prefer lots of it. Some are more 'sensitive' to being watered during dormancy, while many are much more opportunistic and will continue growing well regardless of it, it given regular watering, sunlight and warmth. Location should also be taken into consideration. For example: while in my zone semps grow great in full sunlight, they are bit more sensitive to it in z10 because of sunlight being generally much more intense and heat is higher.

Looking at the photos, I do not think your soil drains well enough. How often do you water your plants? In temps you have, potting mix should be drying fast enough, unless it is water-retaining. What is in your potting mix?

I never had E. 'Blue Prince", just commented on what I see in pics. As I said, it may have been put into too much sunlight suddenly, not that it doesn't need it. I keep all of mine in full sun, but they get acclimatized in spring. What were the roots like when you got it? It may not be able to absorb water properly if they were dead (they could have dried up) - I am just guessing.

What is the trailing-sprawling plant behind it? It looks bit etiolated in the photo. That means less light than it needs...

In addition to what Rina said, sometimes group plantings may initially look pleasing to the eye but the plants may have different requirements.

Once you learn which plants you have, you’ll understand better which prefer full sun and which filtered light in addition to their seasonal requirements.

While they may all be succulents, you shouldn’t assume they all have identical needs.

Thanks ladies for your excellent inputs. Regarding soil I use Dr Earths Cactus and Succulent soil. Seems to drain quite well. I have over one hundred succulents and cacti and this is first time I’ve seen an Echeveria close up like this one. I’ve since move to a bit larger deeper pot and moved to different area with a little less sun. I use a moisture meter to check each to be sure dry or nearly dry before watering. For plants in arrangements, I use the meter for each plant and use a syringe to water only ones requiring it. So far so good. I had fun making the arrangements, but now I see the value in individual pottings. Eventually I’ll probably move select ones to their own pot. While I have a ton of room, I am trying to appease my husband’s wishes of not too much clutter. He doesn’t appreciate plants and nature the way I do. I have eighty rosebushes and they drive him nuts. I may decide to take a few out this winter to make space for the succs. He might like that idea. We’ll see. I never knew I’d fall so in love with succulent until recently. I’ve had a few pots of them over the past few years and sonetime after our CV lockdown, I replanted all my old succs in new pots. Then I was at my local nursery and noticed so many pretty and interesting looking ones and my obsession began. then came Etsy. Oh boy. Well I told my husband hey I’m buying all these succs in order to someday maybe propagate and sell but first I have a ton of info to read and then remember. Memories not the best at my age. I told him maybe when I retire at 68 or 70. I’ll be 64 in three weeks. Anyway. Thanks again for your help!

What is the reason you moved that echeveria into bigger and deeper pot? I would have gone exactly opposite way. General recommendation is not to go much bigger than 1-1.5" bigger than root ball. Big pot = lots of soi, and if water retaining, succulents roots could end up rotting. I am not sure because I never used a syringe, but doubt that water doesn't soak the soil, even if you "inject" it into 1 spot. When watering succulents, they should be watered thoroughly, until water starts draining out of drainage hole. Nex watering should be when potting mix dried up almost completely, all of it - not just the top.. I am not familiar with the soil you used, but most ppl using soil mix it with lots of sifted pumice or perlite, in 1:1 ratio. That makes it well draining.
