My Rockery + Georgia Blue close up

I'd never heard of the term rockery until a woman I work with from Whales said that is what they called it.

Plus below that is a Veronica Peduncularis "Georgia Blue" Close up and personal. Each flower is about 1/4 of a penny in size

Hey Susan, Not sure if you are still on here. I have been trying to find these seeds. I came across your post. I am in the panhandle also, Tallahassee. Well, here I am...the OP.....two yrs later....with questions again...lol. Mine hasn't spread at all compared to the above posters comments. It come back each year but always looks a bit sparse. So what am I doing wrong? Does it spread underground or just on top of soil?ÃÂ Could it be that since I use pine bark nugget mulch that it has no soil to grab onto?ÃÂ Am planning to use pine straw this year.ÃÂ Will that make any difference? They get full sun from sunrise till mid-afternoon. I admit, I prolly haven't cut them back much since there's not much to prune. Fyi, everything else in bed grows great. PS - there's really no point in posting a pic. If u go back and look at my original post, 2nd pic, bottom left corner......that's how they looked 2 yrs ago and they look exactly the same size today. What's wrong? Thx! Bonnie

Hi Kathy. I took six cuttings (though I should have taken many more!) and dipped mine in rooting hormone first then stuck them in an outdoor sandbox to root and kept them moist. They took a little over 2 weeks to start rooting but they didn't develope alot of roots in the propagation box for me like many of other perennials do so I thought they needed more time in the box. Seems like I left them there over a month with not much further root progress so I went ahead and planted them in the garden expecting to lose some. I actually thought all but one of the babies had died in the summer heat but was pleasantly surprised this spring when they all came back and they must have nice big root systems now judging by their sizes. I'm going to try and take alot more cuttings this year so I'll have plenty to share at next year's spring swap. Hope this helps. Squirrellypete

Ground cover for rockery and steps

Very nice wall. I'd consider planting the woolly thyme between the paver steps since you have it available, but any other low, creeping, full sun groundcover will work - any of the creeping thymes, blue star creeper (can get dieback in winter, so not exactly fully evergreen), leptinella or even Scotch or Irish moss. Both the leptinella and mosses will provide a dense and very cushiony surface on the pavers - great for bare feet :-) For the top of the wall, I'd consider something a little showier. Sunrose (Helianthemum cultivars) are evergreen, drape nicely and provide a long season of color, Lithodora if you like the intense blue (will also experience some winter dieback), heaths or heathers, dwarf hebes, even prostrate rosemary, although that looks best with a taller wall. Early spring in area nurseries will provide a wide array of blooming "rockery" plants from which to choose, but nearly all are very early season bloomers, so lack color later on. Sedums (stonecrops) and sempervivums (hens and chicks) are great to poke into niches along the face of the wall. Neither they or the groundcovers require any more soil to take hold than what's attached to the roots in their little pots.

njmomma - I'm a semi professional photographer (art fairs and so forth) and use Photoshop CS. Photoshop Elements is like a Photoshop lite and can do it also MUCH cheaper.

I have a blog where I'm documenting all of my gardens and landscaping with photos so I can see the progression. Not just the pretty photos but when things happen so NEXT year I'll understand the timing of everything.

Like a learning project - I've only been "into" gardening for 3 years and started with a new house and mud lawn - now I have 4 gardens. A Rockery, Mailbox, Clay and Butterfly garden all doing doing different things at different times.

I get SO confused LOL

Grinder, thanks for posting your photos. I can never see too many photos on GW. I like your Rockery. Looks like you are doing a great job with the garden after only being at gardening for 3 years. I checked out your blog. Have you built your own rock walls? Really good job. Your Georgia Blue Veronica looks a little different than mine. The foliage looks almost fuzzy, reminding me of a Nepeta? Mine seems smooth to me. I wonder why. I do like your 'stylized' photo of it. Really does look like a watercolor. Looks like fun. Will enjoy seeing more photos as your plants grow and bloom.
